POSITION SUMMARY

The Safety Director serves as the enterprise owner of the company’s safety function, responsible for defining and driving a comprehensive, company-wide safety strategy across all operations. This role establishes and continuously evolves safety programs, systems, and risk management frameworks that align with organizational goals, regulatory requirements, and the unique demands of civil construction.


YOUR ROLE

  • Lead the development and execution of a company-wide safety strategy, ensuring alignment with organizational goals, risk tolerance, and the unique demands of civil construction operations.
  • Establish and continuously evolve enterprise safety programs and systems that drive measurable improvements in risk reduction, compliance, and operational performance across all projects.
  • Provide executive leadership with data-driven insights on safety performance (e.g., TRIR, EMR, leading/lagging indicators), influencing strategic decisions, resource allocation, and long-term investments.
  • Oversee organization-wide compliance with all local, state, and federal safety regulations, ensuring adherence to industry standards and positioning the company as a leader in safety excellence.
  • Design and implement scalable risk management frameworks that proactively identify, assess, and mitigate hazards across diverse project environments.
  • Direct incident and near-miss investigation processes, establishing root-cause analysis standards and ensuring findings translate into systemic improvements and preventative strategies.
  • Build, lead, and develop a high-performing safety team, fostering accountability, professional growth, and consistent execution of safety initiatives across all levels of the organization.
  • Define and drive a comprehensive safety training strategy, ensuring workforce competency through standardized onboarding, ongoing education, and leadership development programs.
  • Champion a company-wide culture of safety excellence, embedding accountability, engagement, and proactive risk awareness into all aspects of operations.
  • Partner with executive leadership, project teams, and key stakeholders to integrate safety as a core component of project planning, execution, and delivery.
  • Serve as the primary representative for all external safety interactions, including regulatory agencies, audits, and client-facing safety engagements.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives that enhance safety performance while supporting operational efficiency and business outcomes.
  • Collaborates with pre-construction departments on upcoming work to review project requirements, support pre-construction safety compliance, and provide required safety documentation and performance metrics.
  • Maintain and oversee all company safety training and certification requirements, including tracking, updating, and ensuring employees remain current with required safety credentials and compliance obligations.
  • Manage and adapt programs designed to achieve and maintain compliance with applicable industry safety standards and performance measures, including EMR, TRIR, DART, LTIR, OSHA recordkeeping, and other key safety metrics and reporting requirements.
  • Authorize and track the performance of company drivers to maintain a legally compliant driver qualification program.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


WHAT YOU BRING

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field required; equivalent combination of education and directly relevant heavy civil construction safety leadership experience may be considered.
  • Professional certifications such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST), Occupational Health and Safety Technician (OHST), or equivalent credentials strongly preferred.
  • 10+ years of progressive construction safety experience, including significant leadership responsibility in heavy civil or horizontal construction environments.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting or leading safety operations across work involving street reconstruction, concrete, excavation and trenching, underground utilities, traffic signals, bridge work, or similarly complex civil infrastructure scopes.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of local, state, and federal safety regulations and industry standards, including OSHA requirements, combined with a strong command of safety performance indicators and compliance measures such as EMR, TRIR, DART, LTIR, and related reporting and analysis.
  • Proven leadership in incident investigations, root cause analysis, and implementation of corrective actions that drive sustainable, enterprise-wide safety improvements.
  • Proven ability to build, develop, and hold accountable high-performing safety teams while influencing field leaders, project teams, and executive stakeholders.
  • Experience designing and leading safety training and workforce development programs, including onboarding, continuing education, certification tracking, and leadership development.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence executive leadership and operational stakeholders through data-driven safety strategies, performance insights, and risk-based decision making.
  • Bilingual in Spanish preferred.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The Safety Director must be capable of traveling to and accessing active construction job sites to support oversight, evaluation, and leadership of safety operations across diverse project environments. This includes walking, standing, and navigating uneven terrain, climbing stairs or ladders, and working in varying weather and construction conditions. The role may require occasional lifting of items up to 25 pounds. Vision abilities include close, distance, and depth perception necessary to assess site conditions and identify potential hazards. This position operates in both office and field environments, with regular interaction with employees, leadership, and external stakeholders.
