Our Team: Tech Strategy & Business Development

The Tech Strategy & Business Development (TSBD) team is an internal consulting team within the Technology organization. The team focuses on projects in areas such as Strategy/Management Consulting, Platform Strategy, and Mergers & Acquisition Advisory. The team has also been tasked with leading a function focused on external engagement with leading technology partners to ensure American Express remains at the forefront of innovation.

The External Engagement team within TSBD is responsible for by originating, incubating, and leading emerging partnerships of top technology innovation partners, including VC firms, startups, consulting firms, and academia. The goal of these partnerships is to enhance American Express’ capabilities and provide an external perspective on technology innovation.

As a Manager/Sr. Manager on the External Engagement team, you will:

  • Cultivate relationships & establish new partnerships, develop and deliver partnership pitches and implement long-term strategies for partnership success
  • Grow & manage portfolio of partnerships, use KPIs to measure success of partnership initiatives, collaborate with partner teams to maximize value of partnerships
  • Guide stakeholders as a thought leader on the constantly evolving innovation landscape, bring deep insights on market trends & competitive threats, develop & implement effective partnership strategies
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams across leadership, research & development, enterprise innovation partners, legal, compliance, and other key verticals
  • Collaborate with colleagues across the company to identify opportunities to extend and enhance partnerships and platform capabilities; ensure inclusion of all relevant assets from different lines of business
  • Prepare and lead executive presentations to highlight critical findings and recommendations
  • Influence others, often without direct authority, persuading with compelling data, facts, and conclusions.
  • Help build an awesome culture through team building and colleague engagement activities.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in business development and partnerships - Ability to manage/lead complex partnerships deals, including working closely relevant stakeholders
  • Proficiency in developing excellent quality presentations and communication materials for an executive audience, is a must
  • 5+ years of demonstrating skills in data analysis, data driven decision making and relationship building
  • Ability to think strategically and creatively, identifying and assesses key points, implications and recommendations
  • High intellectual curiosity, creativity, complex problem solving and strategic and innovative thought leadership.
  • Passion and curiosity for exploring new technologies & innovations and an ability to translate into actionable insights that can inform the pipeline of partnerships
  • Outstanding interpersonal, communication and influencing skills with the ability to work with partners across different functions, colleagues at all levels, and with partners
  • Exceptional skill in driving results against aggressive timelines, managing multiple priorities and executing flawlessly
  • A self-starter with an ability to excel in a dynamic, constantly evolving environment and to switch gears as required
  • Familiarity with one or more core Technology functions in a strategic capacity (i.e. Infrastructure and Cloud Strategy, Platform/ Product Strategy, Enterprise/Business Architecture, Resiliency/Cyber Security Strategy etc.)
  • Knowledge of payments, commerce, FinTech innovation and disruptive technologies and trends
  • Exceptional program management skills to lead end-to-end partnership delivery across key verticals
  • Ability to operate in ambiguity, white space, and evolving priorities.

Preferred:

  • MBA or equivalent
  • Previous Big 4 management consulting or MBB experience
  • Prior experience in managing cross-sector partnerships is a plus
  • Prior exposure to Venture Capitals, FinTech, & emerging tech landscape is a plus

Salary Range: $110,000.00 to $190,000.00 annually + bonus + benefits
