Job Synopsis

The purpose of the Material Resources Center is to process donated material resources for MCC, involve volunteers in the ministry and vision of MCC, educate visitors about MCC’s total mission and generate a portion of MRC budget needs. This position will contribute to producing material resources that are sent internationally. The sewing room intern will assist in the work of the sewing room and areas of the warehouse related to working with fabric donations and quality control. The sewing room intern will work with other MRC staff to engage volunteers with MCC. This is a 12-week internship from June 1 - August 21, 2026.

Key Responsibilities

Specific Tasks and Duties:

Engage volunteers (60%)
Assist in preparing supplies for volunteer activities (20%)
Sort donations (10%)
Assist in organizing sewing room or other workspace (10%)

  • Assist in ensuring all materials are prepared for individuals or groups who arrive to volunteer, taking into account their specific needs and interests.
  • Assist volunteers in getting settled into their activities when they arrive.
  • Learn about and assist in overseeing the production of the reusable sanitary pieces of the Dignity Kit. Assist volunteers in preparing the fabric, cutting fabric, attaching snaps, sewing base units and transport bags, assembling pieces and kit packing.
  • Learn to recognize comforters that fit MCC guidelines for international work and assist volunteers who are preparing them.
  • Assist in preparing and cutting materials for volunteers to sew in the MRC or in their homes.
  • Sort through the donated fabrics to determine the best use of the fabric; comforters, kit bags or other projects.
  • Assist in finding creative upcycling uses for fabrics and share ideas with creative volunteers as appropriate.
  • Assist volunteers in the warehouse as needed due to staff vacations.
  • Other duties as assigned on a temporary basis

Travel expectations: No nights away. ​​

Physical Activity/Demands:

  • ​​Occasionally​ ascending or descending stairs/ladders or the like.
  • ​​Occasionally​ remaining in a stationary position, standing or sitting for prolonged periods of time.
  • ​​Constantly​ moving about to accomplish tasks or move from one worksite to another.
  • ​​Occasionally​ light work that includes moving objects up to 20 pounds.
  • ​​Occasionally​ medium work that includes moving objects up to 50 pounds.
  • ​​Occasionally​ repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands and/or fingers.
  • ​​Occasionally​ operating machinery and/or power tools.
  • ​​Constantly​ assessing the accuracy, neatness and thoroughness of work assigned.

Environment Conditions: This position is not regularly exposed to adverse environmental conditions. The sewing room has air conditioning, but the warehouse does not.
