The role will assist the Field Director and Project Team in completing paleontological surveys, monitoring, fossil prospecting, site documentation, and resource recording in Western U.S. Preference will be given to local candidates. Per diem will be provided for out-of-town stays. Lodging will either be camping or hotel, depending on location. Hire Type: On-call (hourly)
Location: On-site – camping/hotel (Western U.S.A.) This job will require travel, desired candidate will already live in Western USAPay Rate: $25~$30 per hourRequired Qualifications• Bachelor's degree in paleontology, geology, biology, or a closely related field• Successful completion of a paleontology field school or demonstrated equivalent experience• 4 months or more of experience conducting paleontological fieldwork• Frequent out-of-town travel, potentially for extended periods of time• Valid driver's licensePreferred Skills• Experience performing paleontological surveys, fossil prospecting, excavation, and fossil documentation• Knowledge of Western U.S. geology and paleontological resources• Experience with car camping and backpacking• Demonstrates excellent attention to detail, a positive work ethic, reliability, and commitment to working both independently and in a team environment• Previous experience with mapping equipment and other specialized equipment (GPS, tablets, etc.)• Strong communication and organizational skillsPhysical and Mental Requirements and Work Environment• Regular fieldwork or on-site inspections are required, which necessitates the ability to frequently travel/drive a vehicle (sight, hearing, and manual manipulation of driving mechanisms), cognitive ability to plan travel, and use maps or GPS navigation systems.• May require ambulation and movement to enable walking or hiking 10+ miles per day on rough and/or hazardous terrain and occasional climbing, crouching, kneeling, balancing on uneven terrain. Fieldwork may involve exposure to conditions of rain, sun, heat, wind, dust, etc., with exposure to animals, plants, wet conditions, biting insects, and other environmental hazards. May require use of respiratory equipment.• Some fieldwork may require carrying loads up to 25 pounds or working around heavy construction equipment.• Vision is required to observe geological formations, fossil material, and environmental phenomena, and to record and translate observations into text (either keyboard entry on a computer or dictation and transcription into standard scientific terminology).• Mental requirements include the ability to organize one's own work or that of crew members; ability to recognize and document scientific data and analyze findings, as well as perform calculations. Must also be able to observe social and professional interactions and respond appropriately.• Some work is performed primarily in an indoor environment and requires sustained sitting and use of hands and arms to operate a computer and perform data entry or document preparation (or equivalent with accommodation).
