Community Living Supports Person for 22 year old man with Down syndrome
Parents seeking a student of medicine, psychology, social work, law, or education who looks forward to serving clients with disabilities in their future employment.
This job pays $24.00/hour to take our son to activities in the community that coincide with his goals of socializing, staying safe, making friends, using money, and guided independence. The pay would be the same for respite to just hang out with him at home when his parents are away. Activities may include; young adult small group events and youth events at his church, dances and classes with friends through Therapeutic Rec and the Down Syndrome Association, taekwondo practice and events, soccer and basketball practice, grocery shopping, managing finances to pay for meals or activities such as movies and concerts, working out at the YMCA and doing HIIT classes, hikes, and doing exercises to manage time and money. The job could also include assisting with cooking skills and meal planning at home, using the phone, doing chores, and other skills to become more independent at home.
This young man is a black belt in taekwondo, reads music and plays piano, works out at the Y, is an avid athlete, works at Mcleod’s cafe three days a week, volunteers at a horse farm once a week, is very involved in his church, loves God, animals, music, video games, food, and dancing. His communication skills are limited but his goals are to take some BCTC classes in carpentry, get a second job doing construction demo, improve his communication skills, date another girlfriend and eventually get married and live semi-independently. He’s a lot of fun to hang out with and we are seeking someone who will support his interests, have conversations with him, get involved in his church groups with him, enjoy exercising and socializing with him, and helping him socialize with others.
Applicant must be a non-smoker, good driver with a clean, reliable, car to transport him in, and willing to befriend a young man with Down syndrome without patronizing him. He enjoys having one on one thoughtful conversations. When he is comfortable he has a great sense of humor and can string words together in short sentences to carry on conversations. He would need someone to encourage him to converse.
This will be a side job with limited but flexible hours that may change weekly depending on each person’s availability. The days could be any weekday or weekend at any hour until midnight depending on the activity but we would hope to set up a schedule that works well with yours. The max hours per week would be 20 hours. The applicant must be available next semester but having any availability this summer would be great.
To apply send a resume to Tammy Carter at davidcarterfinearts@gmail.com. After initial contact, you may be offered an application and background check that needs to be completed promptly. After the application is complete, you will have an interview with this young man and his parents. If accepted, once the background check is returned clear we can coordinate schedules to begin work. Pay will be every two weeks and direct deposited.
Skills / Knowledge / Abilities
Fun, reliable, prompt, willing to be a friend to a young man with Down syndrome and be involved in the activities that interest him. Be athletic enough to exercise in HIIT class at the Y, non-smoker, be willing to join him in his church groups, and be an excellent driver with a reliable car.
