Community Living Supports Person for 21 year old man with Down syndrome

This job pays $24.00/hour to take our son to activities in the community that coincide with his goals of socializing at his young adult small group events and youth events at his church and with friends through Parks and Rec and the Down Syndrome Association, grocery shopping, managing finances to pay for meals or activities such as movies and concerts, physical exercise at the YMCA, hikes, or at dances, going to therapy appointments, doing exercises to manage time and money, and being safe when parents may be away. The job could also include assisting with cooking skills and meal planning at home and other skills to become more independent at home.

This young man is a black belt in taekwondo, reads music and plays piano, works out at the Y, works at Mcleods cafe two days a week, volunteers at a horse farm once a week, is very involved in his church, loves God, animals, music, video games, food, and dancing. His communication skills are limited but his goals are to improve his education, make more money than he currently does working a couple days a week at his cafe job, and get married. He’s a lot of fun to hang out with and we are seeking someone who will support his interests and enjoy being with him.

Applicant must be a non-smoker, good driver with a clean, reliable, car to transport him in, and willing to befriend a young man with Down syndrome without patronizing him. He enjoys having one on one thoughtful conversations. When he is comfortable he has a great sense of humor and can string words together in short sentences to carry on conversations. He would need someone to encourage him to converse.
