Summer Language Institute Interim Co-Director

The Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures at the University of Pittsburgh seeks an Interim Co-Director of SLI (the Summer Language Institute), pending budgetary approval, beginning as soon as possible and continuing through August 31, 2026. This is a part-time position with expected commitment of 8-10 hours / week in the Spring term, and 20 hours / week in the Summer. Required qualifications include a PhD in Slavic or a closely related field, as well as working knowledge of and expertise in teaching one of the languages from the core of SLI's teaching mission. Additional qualifications include experience and demonstrated leadership in intensive language pedagogy as well as study abroad programming.

The duties of the SLI Interim Co-Director consist of day-to-day administration of the Slavic, East European and Near Eastern Summer Language Institute; creation and review of budgets; maintenance of cost models and fee schedules; coordination with university offices such as Study Abroad. Additional specific duties include review and evaluation of SLI courses and programs (domestic and abroad) and related determinations about policies, procedures, and programming; determining SLI course offerings; recruiting, training, and evaluating SLI instructors; leading the SLI admissions and scholarship process; coordination of student housing and enrollment; liaising with the Study Abroad Office and the Global Operations Support Manager; ensuring familiarity with foreign language instruction; coordinating marketing and promotional efforts; recruiting and assigning instructors; clear communication with instructors regarding all aspects of the program; approving and setting cultural programming selections; conducting instructor orientation; as well as coordinating the Russian language program.
