Whiting Forensic Hospital, under the umbrella of the State of Connecticut, Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) is seeking a Supervising Psychologist 1 (PCN 25318) to join our team. POSITION HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Work Schedule: Monday - Friday
  • Work Hours: Full-time, 40 hours per week
  • Work Shift: First shift, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
  • Location: 70 O'Brien Drive, Middletown, CT

Whiting Unit 6 is a male only, maximum security, long term units for patients with mental illness/substance use disorders that have been found not guilty by reason of insanity or mental defect.

This position offers more than a paycheck - it offers purpose. As a Supervising Psychologist in our facility, you'll have the opportunity to lead meaningful change, mentor professionals, and ensure high standards of care for a population with complex clinical needs.

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING:

  • Providing clinical supervision to four clinical psychologists spanning both competency restoration and long-term acute maximum-security units.
  • Serving as the Unit Psychologist for Whiting Unit 6, where you will work with the multidisciplinary team to provide treatment and assessment to male forensic psychiatric patients with serious and persistent mental illness, severe personality disorders, developmental disorders, involvement with the legal system, and/or acute or historical aggressive behavior.
  • Functioning as a key member of the treatment team planning and monitoring treatment plans and progress, providing individual and group psychotherapy, directly providing and coordinating or providing specialized psychological assessment as needed, developing and implementing behavioral interventions and other specialized psychological treatment.
  • Providing individual forensic psychotherapy to individuals in both the Whiting and Dutcher Services.
  • Providing education to staff members regarding psychological conceptualization and intervention, and collaborating with psychologists and staff members hospital-wide to promote professional growth and continuity of care.
  • Providing testimony in front of the Psychiatric Security Review Board and criminal/civil courts will be required.
  • Psychology department members are strongly encouraged to participate as active members of one or more hospital-wide committees or specialized assessment/treatment services.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)


In state facilities this class is accountable for supervising a major program component or other uses as indicated below.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES


  • Supervises a major independent clinical psychology program;
  • Plans, develops, implements and coordinates new service programs;
  • Schedules, assigns, oversees and reviews the work of staff;
  • Provides staff training and assistance;
  • Conducts performance evaluations;
  • Determines priorities and plans program work;
  • Establishes and maintains program procedures;
  • Develops or makes recommendations on development of policies and standards;
  • Acts as liaison with other operating units, agencies and outside officials regarding program policies and procedures;
  • Selects and administers a variety of objective and projective psychodiagnostic tests;
  • Evaluates individuals level of function and supervises staff in development of individualized treatment plans;
  • Provides consultation on complex cases;
  • Addresses professional and lay groups;
  • May design, implement and direct psychological research programs;
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE


A Doctorate degree in clinical or counseling psychology and two (2) years of postdoctoral experience as a licensed clinical psychologist.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS


  • Incumbents in this class must possess and retain a license to practice psychology in Connecticut. Any person employed by the State of Connecticut prior to July 1, 1985 with a title in the psychology series of the classified services shall be exempt from the above licensure requirements pursuant to Public Act 613, Section 119(c). For certain positions, the appointing authority may require State licensure.
  • Incumbents in this class must possess and maintain eligibility for participation in federal health care programs as defined in 42 U.S. § 1320a-7b(f).
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to be fluent in a foreign language or proficient in the use of the American Sign Language.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
