Summary/Objective:

Reporting to the Assistant Manager of Facilities, the Custodial/Set-Up Services Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the custodial team’s work to clean and maintain the Academy Museum building to the highest standards. This role also involves overseeing the preparation, set-up, staffing, and clean-up for various events throughout the year. Flexibility is essential, as this position requires working outside of regular business hours, including weekends, late nights, and holidays, as well as the ability to work overtime when necessary.


Essential Functions of the Job:

  • Supervise, plan, schedule, inspect, coordinate, and evaluate the custodial and set-up services staff, ensuring the upkeep of the museum is performed efficiently and effectively.
  • Work alongside the custodial and set-up services team as a working supervisor on day or evening shifts.
  • Provide training to staff on proper and efficient custodial duties in accordance with the museum’s training program.
  • Maintain and issue custodial supplies.
  • Assist with the procurement of supplies and parts.
  • Inspect the museum’s buildings, grounds, equipment, machinery, and sidewalks regularly, offering recommendations for improvements or repairs to the supervisor.
  • Undertake comprehensive and ongoing training for the custodial team.
  • Ensure that all tasks are performed safely in conformance with the museum’s safety protocols.
  • Coordinate the set up and break down of tables, chairs, and linens for various meetings, programs, events, and other activities.
  • Foster a positive and respectful working environment, building strong relationships with peers, subordinates, supervisors, administrators, and visitors.
  • Supervise, evaluate, train, and support the development of custodial personnel.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Competencies

  • A high school diploma or equivalent certification of completion.
  • 2+ years of custodial experience as a lead or supervisor, or 3+ years of progressive leadership experience in custodial services.
  • Knowledge of building and safety codes; materials, tools, equipment, and methods used in the custodial trade, and in the repair and maintenance of buildings and related facilities.
  • Understanding of principles and best practices for supervision and training.
  • Knowledge of Cal-OSHA and OSHA occupational safety regulations.
  • Knowledge of modern cleaning methods, including basic methods for cleaning and preserving floors, whiteboards, carpets, furniture, walls, fixtures, locker rooms, and restrooms.
  • Ability to work safely and efficiently, adhering to safe work practices.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) is a plus.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) is highly preferred.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to work both indoors and outdoors in different weather conditions and temperatures.
  • Comfortable working in environments that may be noisy, dirty, or otherwise challenging.
  • Comfortable working on ladders, lifts, and heights.
  • Capable of moving and transporting objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to kneel, bend, stoop, and squat for extended periods.

Compensation: The expected salary for this role is $26.00 per hour. The actual base pay offered will be determined by factors such as experience, skills, training, location, certifications, education, and other factors permitted by law. Decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis.)
