Job Summary
The Surgical Tech - First Assist provides direct assistance to surgeons during operative procedures. This includes preparing the operating room, positioning patients, maintaining a sterile field, assisting with tissue retraction, hemostasis, wound closure, and other technical functions that help the surgeon carry out a safe operation with optimal results. The First Assist collaborates with the surgical team and promotes patient safety in alignment with facility policies and accepted surgical standards.
Essential Functions
- Prepares the operating suite with appropriate instruments, drapes, and equipment.
- Assists in positioning and prepping patients for surgery.
- Provides direct assistance during procedures, including visualization of the operative site, tissue manipulation, suctioning, and irrigation.
- Achieves and maintains hemostasis using approved techniques.
- Assists with wound closure, application of dressings, and securing drainage systems.
- Maintains accurate count of sponges, sharps, and instruments with the circulating nurse.
- Receives and properly processes specimens for lab delivery.
- Ensures equipment is functioning and available for each procedure.
- Assists with endoscopy and other specialty procedures as assigned.
- Demonstrates readiness for call responsibilities and emergency response.

Qualifications
Education
- Graduate of an accredited surgical technology program required.
Licenses/Certifications
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required within time frame required by facility policy.
- Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) credential required within time frame required by facility policy.
Experience
- Experience in a surgical assisting role preferred.
- Must demonstrate strong critical thinking and clinical judgment.
