In this job, you will have the opportunity to influence the future of the system planning process through the performance of enabling system analyses. You will collaborate on the development of planning capabilities that consider needs and mitigation driven by climate change impacts, decarbonization policies, and other trends. You will perform system analysis that will help test and answer future unknowns such as implementation of new technologies and processes, their incorporation into SCE’s transmission, subtransmission, and distribution planning processes. You will help SCE prepare the system for increased electrification while maintaining affordability for our customers. In addition, you will identify opportunities for improvements and modernization of system planning processes, methodologies, and tool development.
The main work you will perform may include:
- Lead scenario analysis with multiple forecasts and forecast sensitivities to identify potential risks and opportunities for the grid.
- Recommend mitigations including new infrastructure and non-wires alternatives to address identified risks and opportunities.
- Lead grid assessments in support of regulatory proceedings (e.g., Climate Adaptation and Vulnerability Assessments, HIGH Distribution Energy Resources Order Instituting Rulemaking, EIS II) .
- Lead grid assessment to support SCE’s Grid Strategy workstreams, including location identification, forecasting, analysis, and solution optimization.
- Provide recommendations on tool development and process enhancements to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of SCE’s system planning processes.
- Support the transition from single point-based power flow analysis to time-series analysis.
- Perform longer-term area planning studies to improve load serving capability and/or reliability performance.
- Collaborate with Strategy, Forecasting, and other stakeholders within the company to achieve common goals and objectives.
- Collaborate with SCE system planning and engineering organizations and technical grid assessments to inform policy advocacy around Transmission, Subtransmission, Distribution, and resource needs, including scenarios and potential for proactive build.

Responsibilities
- Monitors market trends, vendor, industry group and competitor activities to identify opportunities for differentiation and innovation in engineering solutions.
- Develops and maintains asset management plans for utility infrastructure, proactively identifying future system upgrades and contributing to the formulation of departmental and organizational business plans and grid strategies.
- Collaborates with regulatory affairs teams to ensure compliance with local, state, national, and international regulations governing energy engineering projects.
- Identifies areas for process improvement and implements strategies to enhance engineering efficiency and productivity.
- Deploys improvement initiatives and tracks progress using relevant metrics and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to assess the effectiveness of the continuous improvement efforts.
- Addresses any performance issues promptly and creates improvement plans when necessary.
- Plans, designs and oversees the infrastructure of power distribution systems, ensuring compliance with environmental and regulatory standards.
- Coordinates and prioritizes activities within the team to ensure efficient project execution; aids in managing resources and budget activities to achieve strict compliance with the company's guidelines.
- Evaluates and recommends investments in infrastructure, equipment, and technology to support the long- term growth and competitiveness of the engineering department.

Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Bachelor's Degree in a scientific/technical/math field.
- Ten or more years of experience performing engineering work in operations, production, construction or maintenance environments.
- Possess a valid Class C Driver's License.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s Degree or higher in Electrical Engineering or related discipline
- Professional Engineer (PE) License
- Experience in Planning, engineering, or operating electric utility transmission, subtransmission, and distribution grids
- Experience in System planning analyses such as power flow, short-circuit duty, and voltage/transient stability, and software tools such as CYME, PSLF, PowerWorld, and CAPE
- Proficient in programming languages such as Python; experience with SQL and relational database; experience in using GitHub for collaborative coding and project management.
- Understanding of the technical aspects of distributed energy resource (DER) interconnection or experience in interconnection analysis
- Experience scoping potential transmission, subtransmission, and distribution infrastructure project alternatives, considering industry available solutions and upcoming newer technologies.
- Experience tracking key state and federal regulatory proceedings related to grid planning to inform SCE about grid needs and potential infrastructure development opportunities.
- Experience with asset management, including maintenance strategies, lifecycle planning, and risk assessments.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to present complex technical concepts for technical and non-technical audiences (internal and external to SCE).
- Ability to work effectively in areas where processes are not clearly defined, self-starter.

Additional Information
- This position’s work mode is hybrid. The employee will report to an SCE facility for a set number of days with the option to work remotely on the remaining days. Unless otherwise noted, employees are required to work and reside in the state of California. Further details of this work mode will be discussed at the interview stage. The work mode can be changed based on business needs.

Salary range
- $157,800 - $236,700 per year
