Full Time

The Tax Associate reports to the two Tax Senior Associates and will be responsible for basic tax activities including, but not limited to, preparing income tax returns and estimates, preparing indirect tax compliance items, Tax Department documentation, making online tax payments and special projects as needed.

Essential Functions/Responsibilities

  • Prepare and/or review compliance items and planning under supervision of the Tax Senior Associate to ensure accuracy, consistency, and completeness
    • Federal & State Income Tax
    • Personal Property Tax
    • Local Business License and Gross Receipts Tax
    • Sales & Use Tax
    • Form 1099s
    • Track Secretary of State annual filings
    • Extensions and quarterly estimates and payments
  • Prepare and/or review annual financial statement packages to be provided to external preparers
  • Prepare and/or review quarterly and annual informational returns (i.e. governmental surveys and requests)
  • Email e-file authorizations to external preparers
  • Process paper filings for executive signatures and document all signatures, track compliance payments/credits, and certified mail receipts
  • Remain familiar with IRS and SALT guidelines and accounting principles
  • Assist with various tax audits as needed
  • Document, track, and research notices received
  • Contact tax jurisdictions to inquire about notices and prepare official responses for review
  • Manage daily workflows and multiple projects at any given time
  • W-9 preparation and annual mail-merge template
  • Conduct appropriate and applicable research regarding tax issues to ensure accuracy and implementation of specific tax law
  • Documentation of and research regarding new and dissolving joint venture structures
  • Respond to inter-departmental requests and needs

Expectations

  • Complete assignments within timeline and budget
  • Participate in annual planning and budgeting analysis
  • Keep tax team apprised of any partner contact to avoid duplicate requests
  • Use technical ability to find opportunities for the tax department to decrease the tax liabilities for Mill Creek and its joint venture partners
  • Seek opportunities to assist with additional projects to increase technical ability
  • Ability to meet time constraints and deadlines
  • Ability to work overtime from January to April 15 (may be in excess of 50 hours per week), and occasional overtime work required throughout the year.
  • Ability to function in a fast paced environment

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or Master’s degree in accounting or taxation or related field
  • 2-5 years tax experience
  • Proficiency in use of computers and software, including use of Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook, and experience in utilizing an accounting software system
  • Understanding of and ability to analyze financial statements
  • Understanding of and sensitivity to confidential information
  • Ability to effectively and professionally communicate in a team environment
  • Ability to multi-task and manage a complex workload to meet reporting and compliance deadlines
  • Detail oriented with strong organizational skills
  • Takes initiative, takes ownership for actions, and sets examples for others

Preferred Qualifications

  • CPA certified or candidate
  • Yardi or Entrata knowledge and experience a plus
  • Real Estate industry experience
  • Experience with partnership and indirect tax returns
  • Experience working for a Big 4 public accounting firm is strongly preferred. Combination of public accounting and industry experience is preferable
  • Experience using a tax research tools to analyze, interpret, and organize technical tax issues
