Position Summary Brief Description of PSU/School/DeptPortland State University (PSU) is part of the Oregon University System and serves approximately 27,000 students. PSU is home to the Smith Memorial Student Union (SMSU), a 178,000 GSF multi-purpose facility with 28,000 square feet of event space in addition to space dedicated to retail, student organization, and department use. SMSU’s mission is as follows:

As the living room of our urban campus, the Smith Memorial Student Union brings together students and the campus community by providing a center for ideas, programs, services, and engagement that enriches the social, cultural, and educational environment of Portland State.

Facilities and Property Management (FPM) provides a wide range of services related to building operations, maintenance and repair of academic facilities and grounds, related services for all self-supported facilities and programs, and coordinates with construction teams on renovations and new construction. In addition, this division is responsible for Property and Risk Management for the building facilities and grounds.

Facilities and Property Management oversees the work of this position assigned to Smith Memorial Student Union.Position SummaryThe Hotel Maintenance Mechanic supports The University Place Hotel (UPL) in their continuing effort to provide outstanding guest service and improve operational efficiencies. Successful candidates will demonstrate a strong sense of initiative and possess exceptional problem-solving, communication and customer service skills and have the ability to regularly perform work in the presence of the guests while maintaining a professional attitude and presentation as well as a safe, orderly and clean worksite. They will be highly organized, result oriented and enjoy working in a fast paced environment.
The Hotel Maintenance Mechanic will report to the Zone Maintenance Manager and will work closely with the Zone Maintenance Manager to achieve both timely responses to UPL management and guest requests while steadily performing FPM preventive maintenance. This position will interact in a courteous manner with all guests, responding professionally to any questions and complaints.
The Hotel Maintenance Mechanic performs skilled journey-level work in maintenance and repair of machinery and building systems operations. Duties may include but are not limited to:
  • Perform general room maintenance such as unclogging drains, plunging toilets, repairing leaks, changing light bulbs etc.
  • Train and supervise student employees
  • Use Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS)
  • Monitor and respond to work requests delivered via smart-phone, email and radio
  • This position is considered essential personnel and is required to respond during inclement weather events and campus emergencies
  • Work from 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM, Thursday through Monday.

Minimum Qualifications from Classification -Four years of experience maintaining, repairing, and fabricating parts for machinery, tools, and equipment such as automobiles, trucks, hydraulic systems, lift trucks, etc.; OR

-Completion of an approved Mechanical Maintenance Apprenticeship Program.Additional Minimum Qualifications for this Position
  • Experience using manual and power tools to perform work.
  • Proven ability to perform work in a professional customer service manner.
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively with the diverse campus community and staff in the performance of work.
  • Must be willing and able to use Computerized Maintenance Management System and mobile electronic devices to receive and process work orders from customers and staff. Must be comfortable with office equipment, including computer terminals, printers, multi-line telephones, fax machines, and copy machines.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Successfully pass a background check.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience troubleshooting and repairing commercial kitchen equipment.
  • Experience maintaining public pools.
  • Experience and skill in maintaining and repairing HVAC building system equipment such as air conditioning units, package rooftop heating and cooling equipment.
  • Maintenance experience in a hotel, conferencing facility, residential care or educational setting.
  • Skills in computer technology and database management.
  • Ability to write clearly and precisely.
