Summary/Objective:
The Temporary Lighting Technician is responsible for the safe handling, installation, and maintenance of lighting equipment across various Museum departments, with a primary focus on the Exhibition Design & Production department. This role closely collaborates with multiple teams, including AV, Fabrication, Art Handlers, Registration, and Conservation, among others.
Essential Functions of the Job:
- Hang and focus lights.
- Prep, install, deinstall, maintenance & troubleshooting of equipment and systems.
- Build and test prototypes or proofs-of-concept for Museum exhibits and displays.
- Update inventory and organize storage spaces for lighting.
- Update lighting paperwork such as Vectorworks and Lightwright.
- Openly receive feedback on safe practices when working around art.
- Other work-related duties assigned.
Required Competencies:
- A bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
- Proficient understanding of various lighting equipment (architectural preferred but not a must), including track lighting systems, PAR cans, ellipsoidals, filters, gobos, lenses, dimming systems, and more.
- Comfortable and experienced in hanging and focusing lights at heights ranging from 10' to 25' while following all safety protocols.
- Electronic and electrical skills, including soldering, wiring, and testing of cables and electronic components.
- General understanding of programming logic; training can be provided for specific systems used (e.g., ETC Paradigm, Mosaic, Gio and Ion).
- Experience operating tools & equipment for carpentry; metal shop; and paint.
- Competency reading electrical drawings, light plots, and Lightwright documents.
- Ability to troubleshoot complex systems and clearly report them.
- Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with fellow staff to follow Museum protocols, particularly when working near or around artwork.
- Basic proficiency with Microsoft software (e.g., Word, Excel) and Outlook for email and calendar coordination.
- Flexibility to work after hours and on weekends as needed.

Physical Demands:
- Ability to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation, which include intermittent walking, sitting, and standing.
- Move and transport up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to safely maneuver ladders and operate lifts around art objects.

Compensation: The expected salary range for this role is $25.00-$35.00 per hour. The actual base pay offered will be determined by factors such as experience, skills, training, location, certifications, education, and other factors permitted by law. Decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis.
