Position Summary

The Transportation Project Manager is a pivotal role within our Transportation Practice Group, offering the opportunity to lead high-profile projects for IDOT, the Illinois Tollway, and various county and municipal agencies. This will be an experienced Civil Engineer with deep technical proficiency in transportation design and a strong to lead projects. This position supports critical design efforts and requires experience with MicroStation alongside the ability to manage multidisciplinary workflows.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following inexhaustive list of duties represents a sample of work routinely performed by this role:

Project Leadership

Independently manage and execute roadway and highway design tasks for projects of moderate to large complexity with support and guidance of senior transportation engineers. Oversee junior engineers managing daily tasks related to project deliverables.

Technical Excellence

Lead assignments including roadway geometrics, ADA design, drainage system design, traffic analysis, barrier warrant analyses, and maintenance of traffic (MOT). Advance Modeling: Perform high-level design primarily using MicroStation and OpenRoads Designer (ORD) 3D modeling software. Perform traffic studies and analysis using HCS, Synchro, and other modeling software as required.

Project Documentation

Lead the development of preliminary design studies (Phase I), Project Reports, technical specifications, and quantity take-offs.

Client Management

Act as a primary point of contact for clients; assist in scoping engineering services and developing fee proposals. Familiarity with professional transportation organizations. Ability to represent the firm at professional transportation organization events.

QA/QC Oversight

Ensure technical accuracy by checking design computations and preparing Engineer’s Opinion of Probable Cost (EOPC).

Coordination

Manage engineering plan and permit submittals to regulatory agencies and collaborate with structural engineers on bridge-related elements.

Professional Agility

Demonstrate strong project management skills and a willingness to tackle new or unfamiliar technical challenges.

Supervisory and Mentorship

Ability to lead a team of junior engineers and technicians on a project basis and with respect to career development and advancement.

Qualifications and Experience

Education + Degree

Required: Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related field.Preferred: Master's degree in Civil Engineering or related field.

Experience, Certification, or Licensure

Required: Professional Engineer (PE) license in Illinois. Minimum 8+ years of progressively responsible experience in transportation-related engineering. Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills. Must have or be able to obtain and maintain a Real ID or Passport in order to undergo commercial airfare travel. Must have or be able to obtain and maintain a valid driver's license.

Technical + Professional Skills

Proficiency with MicroStation and OpenRoads Designer (ORD) 3D modeling software. Experience with HCS, Synchro, and other traffic modeling software. Knowledge of Illinois DOT or Illinois Tollway standards and procedures preferred.

Working Environment

As a project leader and staff mentor, in person meetings and office time with staff is expected, but the arrangement will be agreed upon depending on candidate proximity to the St. Charles, IL office. Periodic travel (≤ 10%) to project sites, client locations, or industry events is expected.

This position primarily operates in a professional office setting with standard office equipment and a quiet, climate-controlled environment. While in the office, there is no regular exposure to loud noise, hazardous materials, or heavy machinery.

This role also requires periodic travel to project sites, including locations undergoing renovation or active construction. During site visits, the employee may be exposed to non-temperature-controlled environments, construction noise, dust, and other typical conditions found on job sites. Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) may be required during these visits, depending on site conditions. While on site visits, an individual in this role will be required to work atypical hours at the request of the client or role demands.

Physical Demands

Sitting/Standing: This is a sedentary role most of the time. However, during field work, this role requires the ability to be on your feet moving around a field location for most of the day.

Walking: This role requires the ability to move about outside in various geographic and building terrains to do field work.

Stooping/Kneeling/Crouching/Crawling: This role may require stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and ladder climbing as part of field work/verification activities.

Using Hands/Fingers: This role constantly operates technological office equipment such as laptop, mouse, keyboard, computer monitors, telephones, scanners, copiers, and fax machines.

Talking/Hearing: This role requires constant communication with others in the organization to exchange information, review information, and make decisions about information.

Seeing: This role requires the ability to see, view, and distinguish all aspects of construction to ensure quality control.

Carrying/Lifting: This role requires lifting up to 30 lbs to transport technological office equipment, safety equipment, and other needed construction items to and from various workspaces.

Home Office Connectivity Requirements for Hybrid & Remote Positions

To ensure reliable collaboration, client service, and secure access to company systems, the Company requires minimum connectivity standards to be eligible or remain eligible to work in a hybrid or remote capacity. Employees working remotely must maintain broadband internet service capable of consistently supporting video conferencing, VPN connectivity, and cloud-based applications. Hybrid or remote work eligibility may be reassessed if connectivity standards are not met. This includes:

Wired broadband service (cable, fiber, or DSL) with at least minimum 100 Mbps download / 20 Mbps uploadSome positions may require minimum 200-300 Mbps download / 25-35 Mbps upload speed

Cellular hotspot or fixed wireless cellular services (e.g., T-Mobile Home Internet) may not be used as a primary connection. The Company will comply with all local, state, and federal requirements as it relates to the reimbursement of home internet expenses. Eligibility for reimbursement of home internet expenses is defined in a separate policy.
