Position Description
The City of Tolleson is seeking qualified individuals interested in joining our team at the Wastewater Treatment Plant or at the City's Water Treatment Facilities. This posting is intended to fill open positions on both the Water and Wastewater Divisions within the City of Tolleson. This position may be filled as either a Water/Wastewater Operator I (Trainee) or a Utilities Technician II (Certified Operator in Water or Wastewater), depending on the candidate's experience and certifications.
Employees in this position perform technical operations, maintenance, and repair of the City's water and wastewater treatment facilities and associated equipment in compliance with all environmental regulatory laws, rules, and regulations. Duties include conducting field inspections and collecting wastewater samples, performing laboratory testing and recording data, operating, monitoring, and maintaining treatment plant processes and related equipment, operating heavy equipment and performing minor repairs, completing logs, reports, and work orders, monitoring and adjusting reclaim water systems, gas chlorination equipment, and auto samplers, managing biosolids in compliance with regulations, and ensuring all equipment operates safely and effectively within set parameters. Qualifications
A High School diploma or General Educational Development (GED) equivalent. A valid Arizona driver's license required.
Operator I (Trainee)
- No ADEQ certification required at hire.
- Must obtain an ADEQ Grade 1 Wastewater/Water Treatment Operator certification within one (1) year of hire.
Utilities Technician II (Certified Operator)
- Requires a valid ADEQ Grade 2 Wastewater/Water Treatment Operator certification at time of hire.
Additional Requirements:
The role involves exposure to various hazards, extreme weather, manual labor, confined spaces, and occasional heavy lifting. Operators may work alone and must be available for weekends, nights, holidays, overtime, and emergency call-outs. SCBA certification is required for Wastewater.
For Wastewater, the position will be assigned night and/or evening shifts after the completion of a brief training period.
For Water, the position will be assigned day time hours and subject to weekend shifts and on-call duties.

Operator I (Trainee)
Medium: Exerting 20-50 lbs. occasionally, 10-25 lbs. frequently, or up to 10 lbs. constantly.
Utilities Technician II (Certified Operator)
Heavy: Exerting 50-100 lbs. occasionally, 10-25 lbs. frequently, or up to 10-20 lbs. constantly.
Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, blood and other bodily fluids, and extreme temperatures.
