The American Association for Justice (AAJ) works to preserve the constitutional right to trial by jury and to make sure people have a fair chance to seek justice when they are injured by the negligence or misconduct of others - even when it means taking on the most powerful corporations.AAJ is seeking a&nbsp;Controller&nbsp;for its Finance department.&nbsp;The Controller leads the day-to-day accounting operations and supervises three finance team members with functional responsibility over accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash, and financial reporting for AAJ, the AAJ Education Fund, the AAJ PAC, the AAJ Endowment Fund, and the consolidation of all AAJ’s related entities.&nbsp; The Controller also ensures that AAJ has the systems and procedures in place to support effective program implementation and conduct flawless audits.Essential Duties include:&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<ul><li>Consistently analyze financial data and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicate monthly and annual financial statements; monitor progress and changes and keep senior leadership abreast of AAJ’s financial status.</li><li>Support the CFO in engaging the board’s audit and budget committees around issues and trends in financial operating models and delivery.</li><li>Manage organizational cash flow forecasting and establish finance and administrative systems to support program operations.</li><li>Maintain internal control and safeguard receipt of revenue, costs, program budgets and actual expenditures.</li><li>Oversee all accounts, ledgers and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements.</li><li>Design, establish and maintain an organizational structure and staffing to effectively accomplish the department’s goals and objectives.</li><li>Coordinate annual business insurance renewal.</li><li>Direct financial audits: serve as primary contact for auditors and oversee preparation of audit financial statements and footnotes.</li><li>Oversee preparation of tax schedules for completing Form 990 and related schedules.</li><li>Oversee preparation of lobbying schedules for completing lobbying reports.</li><li>Assist AAJ’s leadership in the annual budgeting and planning process.</li><li>Monitor and analyze monthly operating results against budget.</li><li>Administer and review all financial plans and compare actual results with a view to identify, explain and correct variances as appropriate.</li></ul>Qualifications:<ul><li>B.S. &nbsp;degree in accounting required. Job-Specific Responsibilities: <ul><li>Reporting to the Senior Financial Officer, the ABO Manager is responsible for the comprehensive financial operation of a large research and teaching department overseeing the success of research-focused financial accounting and procurement functions, service center financials, as well as financial policy administration.</li><li>Responsible for managing direct reports’ assignments and performance including overseeing their timely and accurate deliverables in all research financial accounting and operations including service center financials through advising, coaching, and mentorship.</li><li>Collaborates to ensure fund use and cost allocation are appropriate, and requests follow established workflow in compliance with University policy and procedures, and applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations; implements internal controls; coordinates account closeout as needed.</li><li>Manages recharge center and service-center budgets; ensures the integrity of a local tracking and billing database, and systems of filing and documentation for audit purposes performs complex Profit and Loss analysis and rate development; develops and models methodologies for scenario and ad hoc analyses, designs reporting formats and rigorously implements internal controls.
