Job Summary

  • The Lead Nuclear Medicine Technologist is responsible for coordinating the daily operations of the Nuclear Medicine department, performing a full range of nuclear medicine procedures, and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. This role provides leadership, technical guidance, and training for technologists, while also delivering high-quality patient care and managing quality control, inventory, and accreditation processes.

Essential Functions

  • Prepares and administers radiopharmaceuticals and other medications for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures
  • Performs, processes, and evaluates nuclear imaging studies; ensures quality and accuracy of results
  • Oversees quality control procedures, regulatory compliance, and safety standards
  • Coordinates and maintains department schedule, coverage, and workflow for Nuclear Medicine staff
  • Prepares and manages radioactive materials inventory, calibrations, and documentation per NRC, ACR, and USP guidelines
  • Assists the Radiation Safety Officer in monitoring radiation exposure and safety compliance
  • Leads equipment maintenance assessments and collaborates on capital planning
  • Participates in Radiation Safety Committee meetings and supports accreditation readiness
  • Provides training and ongoing education for staff on procedures, safety, and protocols
  • Collaborates with radiologists and referring physicians to optimize protocols and imaging quality
  • Ensures accurate documentation and procedural coding; collaborates with Chargemaster as needed

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Expectations

  • Proficient in all nuclear medicine procedures and imaging modalities
  • Strong understanding of radiation safety, isotope handling, and regulatory compliance
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills
  • Ability to analyze image quality, troubleshoot equipment, and train technologists
  • Skilled in maintaining documentation for inspections, accreditation, and inventory
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, and lifting (up to 75 lbs)
  • Repetitive motion, reaching, and patient transfers required
  • Exposure to ionizing radiation and hazardous chemicals
  • Hospital imaging and procedural areas
  • Exposure to radioactive materials, infectious diseases, and stressful situations

Qualifications

Education

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (Required)
  • Graduate of an accredited Nuclear Medicine Technology Program (Required)

Licenses/Certifications

  • Certified by the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB) or American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in Nuclear Medicine (Required)
  • BLS certification (Required)

Experience

  • Minimum 5 years of clinical nuclear medicine experience (Required)
  • Prior supervisory or lead experience (Preferred)
