Description Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Characterization of Materials Degradation Postdoctoral Research Associate to investigate degradation mechanisms in materials under extreme environments in our Characterization department. Our team works a 4x10 schedule located out of our Materials and Fuels Complex with every Friday off. You will investigate materials degradation mechanisms in advanced fuels for next-generation advanced reactors and in structural materials under creep deformation. Particularly, you will focus on uranium nitride fuel and its interactions with fission products as well as diffusional creep mechanisms in nickel-based alloys including high entropy alloys. We will require a strong background in advanced materials characterization (e.g., focused ion beam, and transmission electron microscopy, and bulk/small-scale mechanical testing) and a solid understanding of materials science and engineering and metallurgy principles. You will help collect experimental data, analyzing the data to determine material performance and understand the basic mechanisms of materials degradation in nuclear materials. You will publish research results in internal reports and open literature promptly. Collaboration between computational and experimental elements will be strongly encouraged through research exchanges to develop a common basis for the postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and principal investigators.
