Job Description Job Summary: The Balskus lab is searching for a technician to provide experimental support for an on-going project aimed at developing therapeutics for the vaginal microbiome. Working closely with senior lab members, the technician will primarily be responsible for assisting in the design, execution and analysis of assays that assess microbial growth, metabolism, and enzymatic activity. Additionally, the employee will assist with other tasks that support the operation of the overall lab, as described in more detail below. The research assistant may work on an independent project, but within specific guidelines. Strong organizational and communication skills are critical. Final candidates may be asked to demonstrate their technical ability through an in-lab demonstration. Job-Specific Responsibilities: <ul><li>Under supervision of a senior lab member, assist in the design and execution of assays to assess anaerobic bacterial growth or enzymatic activity. This includes aliquoting clinical samples and testing these samples for enzymatic activity. This will also include the preparation of vaginal bacterial cultures for testing in various enzymatic assays.</li><li>Assist in the maintenance of equipment and instrumentation for these analyses including lab automation instruments such as a Biomek iSeries and other liquid handling instruments.</li><li>Inoculation and maintenance of anaerobic microbial cultures from freezer stocks in preparation for assays.</li><li>Preparation and sterilization of growth media.</li><li>Purification of enzymes.</li><li>Preparation and analysis of samples through using various analytical methods, in particular small molecule liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), quantitative PCR (qPCR), RNA-Seq, and biochemical assays on clinical samples and cultures.</li><li>Working with a senior lab member, develop workflows for processing and analyzing the resulting data using python. Report results using a variety of scientific, word processing, and presentation platforms.</li><li>Maintenance and cleaning of additional laboratory equipment and glassware.</li><li>May instruct other lab members in certain techniques or procedures. Job Duties:
Duties: • Provide students with supplemental academic support by teaching skills that enhance performance, including effective study strategies, note-taking techniques, and approaches to answering test questions for math and other coursework. • Assist students with homework, projects, test preparation, papers, research and other academic tasks to reinforce key concepts. • Emphasize support for skills, concepts, and the use of specific technologies for students with ADA accommodations by assisting them in accessing appropriate assistive technology tools and equipment and providing guidance on how to use these resources effectively in the classroom. • Provide tutoring services at HCTC locations, through various modes (on campus or online), and at various times (day, evening, and weekend), as needed. • Assist students with navigating Blackboard, Peoplesoft Student User Account, and a variety of software platforms relating to academic tasks such as test preparation, assignments and projects, and other academic responsibilities to reinforce key concepts. • Provide advising support for new/continuing students creating/updating graduation plans. • Utilize Brainfuse and a variety of software platforms to provide tutoring support, track student progress, document interactions, monitor academic performance, maintain administrative records and statistics for tutoring usage, and inform individualized student outreach through data-driven decision-making. • Perform outreach to potential students to assess eligibility and facilitate program enrollment as needed. • Organize and facilitate academic, social, community, and cultural enrichment events for student participants. • Assist with and/or Co-lead off-campus events such as educational enrichment trips to 4-year universities and colleges. • Other duties as assigned.

Duties: • Assists incoming and current students through providing intrusive case management while serving as an academic advisor and student advocate, coordinating both academic and non-academic services to support students effectively. • Monitor student progress to maintain progress, ensuring successful completion of students’ Individualized Graduation Plan. • Provide career exploration and career counseling services. • Address students’ academic areas of need and provide support through tutoring services. • Provide students with supplemental skills to improve academic performance, including study strategies, note-taking skills, time and organizational management, and basic technical skills. • Assist students with navigating Blackboard, Peoplesoft Student User Account, and a variety of software platforms. academic tasks such as, test preparation, assignments and projects, and other academic tasks to reinforce key concepts. • Assist students in navigating financial aid processes by providing guidance on eligibility, required documentation, application steps, and important deadlines to ensure they understand and successfully complete financial aid requirements. • Support students receiving ADA accommodations by assisting them with usage of appropriate assistive technology tools and equipment, using these resources with coursework. • Utilize a variety of software platforms to track progress, document interactions, monitor academic performance, and support data-informed decision-making for individualized student outreach. • Provide necessary referrals to HCTC and community resources for assistance with non-academic barriers. • Work collaboratively as a team to best serve students’ needs. • Organize and facilitate academic, social, community, and cultural enrichment events for student participants. • Co-lead off-campus events such as educational enrichment trips to 4-year universities and colleges. • Assist students with college transfer to a 4-year institution. • Perform outreach to potential students to assess eligibility and facilitate enrollment. • Other duties as assigned.
