Job Description

The Operating Room Technician plays a crucial role in supporting the surgical team, offering direct patient care as a scrub/instrument technician during surgeries. This role involves setting up sterile environments, passing instruments, and maintaining accurate counts of sponges, needles, and instruments. Additionally, the technician assists with patient positioning and movement as directed by the surgical registered nurse. The position requires a high level of professionalism, confidentiality, and respect, as well as collaboration with the care team to meet patient needs and support departmental goals.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the surgical team during operating procedures under the direction of the Registered Nurse.
  • Provide direct patient care as a scrub/instrument person, ensuring a sterile environment.
  • Arrange sterile setups, pass sponges, instruments, and sutures, and adjust lighting as needed.
  • Maintain accurate counts of sponges, needles, and instruments during procedures.
  • Assist with patient positioning and movement as directed by the surgical RN.
  • Clean and maintain the operating room, ensuring a safe and hygienic environment.
  • Deliver care promptly and professionally, maintaining patient confidentiality.
  • Work collaboratively as part of the care team to meet patient needs and departmental objectives.
  • Provide quality customer service and actively participate in performance improvement initiatives.
  • Support professional growth and development by staying updated with industry advancements.

Qualifications

  • High School degree or equivalent, with the ability to read, speak, and write English.
  • Successful completion of a nationally or regionally accredited surgical technologist program and a certified surgical technologist credential.
  • Alternatively, completion of an appropriate training program for surgical technology in the U.S. military or evidence of employment as a surgical technologist before December 21st, 2011.
  • Demonstrated competencies as listed on the Assessment and Evaluation Tool for this position.
  • Ability to work in a hospital environment with potential exposure to infectious diseases and hazardous materials.
  • Requires considerable standing, reaching, and walking, with the ability to lift up to 60 lbs.
  • Excellent hand-eye coordination, finger dexterity, visual acuity, and hearing ability are essential.
  • Maintains retraction for extended periods, ensuring precision and focus.
  • Reports to the Clinical Director in Perioperative Services.
  • Adheres to all safety protocols and maintains a high standard of patient care.
