Research in the Matthes Lab focuses on measuring soils, streams, and trees to characterize the processes that produce and release carbon dioxide and methane and influence the cycling of carbon and other nutrients. Work within a week will generally be partitioned among 2-3 days of fieldwork and labwork and 2-3 days of data analysis. Fieldwork at Harvard Forest involves working full days (up to 8 hours) in year-round outdoor conditions. An employee assigned to this classification works on one of three shifts and may be required to work holidays or evenings outside of the scheduled workday.<p><b>Patrol </b></p><ul><li>Patrols campus property by foot, bicycle, or motor vehicle.</li><li>Enforces state laws and campus policy, procedures, rules, and regulations.</li><li>Responds to emergency calls as well as non-emergency police calls for service.</li><li>Provides general police assistance including giving directions, jumpstarts, car unlocks, tire changes, and safety escorts.</li><li>Assists persons with mobility or other disabilities.</li><li>Provides customer service and maintains good public relations with student body, faculty, staff, and visitors.</li><li>Assists other College personnel in the operation of safety monitoring systems, the emergency operations center, access control, alarms, fire suppression, equipment, and the emergency messaging system.</li><li>Responds to fire, security, and mechanical system alarms and reports emergencies and equipment malfunctions in accordance with established procedures.</li><li>Locks and unlocks buildings, rooms, and offices.</li><li>Administers CPR, performs first aid, and operates an Automated Electronic Defibrillator (AED), if necessary.</li></ul><p><b>Community Engagement </b></p><ul><li>Collaborates with other campus and non-campus partners to identify and develop solutions to safety and security issues.</li><li>Provides safety and security training to students, faculty, and staff.</li><li>Participates in various campus events and activities that promote campus safety.</li><li>Engages in public contact via telephone, e-mail, or in person to take complaints, answer inquiries, and provide assistance.</li></ul><p><b>Administrative </b></p><ul><li>Completes and maintains required documentation, such as incident and criminal offense reports.</li><li>Interviews witnesses and crime victims.</li><li>Collects and processes physical evidence.</li><li>Testifies in court, as well as in college administrative review teams.</li><li>Receives and documents lost and found items.</li></ul><p><b>Culture of Respect</b></p><ul><li>Fosters and maintains a safe environment of respect and inclusion for faculty,&nbsp;staff, students, and members of the community.</li></ul><p><b>Additional Duties &amp; Responsibilities:</b></p><ul><li>Attends all required department meetings and training.</li><li>Assists other College department and personnel during peak times and special events that serve the College.</li><li>May assist persons with mobility or other impairments.</li><li><b>Subject to call-in (24) twenty-four hours a day (7) seven days a week.
