
Academic Support Lead, Math/Columbus Promise
Job Summary
The Academic Support Lead performs the duties of a professional tutor. The Academic Support Lead will tutor in-person and is expected to work with students, either one-on-one or in small groups to help them attain a deeper and more substantial command of the assigned subject matter. The Academic Support Lead must be able to work with multiple students and with other tutors present, in a shared tutoring space. The Academic Support Lead will communicate with the department regarding individual student progress and needs. This position is responsible for generating reports from tutoring software and sending them to his/her supervisor. The Academic Support Lead must have a strong command of the subject matter and be able to communicate it effectively to students using a variety of methods and teaching tools. This position works collaboratively with Columbus Promise Tutoring staff, and the Math Department to support the academic progress of Columbus Promise scholars.ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Tutoring
- Works in-person with students, either one-to-one or in small groups, to help them attain a deeper and more substantial command of assigned subject matter, and to develop and apply effective learning and critical thinking skills. Provides tutoring sessions and activities, outreach events and activities, and daily operations as needed.
- Provides academic support for and in Columbus Promise Math cohort classrooms in collaboration with course instructors. Examples of activities include attending class meetings; consulting with instructors about course topics; and providing in-class guidance. Provides direct support to students in learning and understanding concepts, assignments, and material in the tutor’s area of expertise.
- Communicates with Columbus Promise and Tutoring administrators regarding student progress and needs, and generates reports as requested by supervisors. Effectively communicates to students using a variety of methods and instructional tools.
Administrative/Clerical Functions
- Maintains documentation of all tutoring sessions. Generates department reports for tutoring and maintains documentation of department tutoring interactions. Provides course instructor(s) with communication/information that can be used to facilitate student learning of course content. Advanced use and implementation of the College’s tutoring software.
- Works collaboratively with the Math Department and tutoring administration, staff, and tutors to develop strategies and materials for effective tutoring and learning skills support.
Continuous Learning & Mentoring
- Maintains a thorough knowledge of the course material, as well as multiple instructional methodologies, to accommodate various student learning styles. Attends tutor training sessions.
- Provides support to LSS, LSS IIs, Peer Tutors & Supplemental Instructional Leaders. Assists with technical support of tutoring software and reports. Works in close collaboration with academic department leadership and faculty leads on course specific content.

OTHER DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Manages multiple assignments of varying complexity while meeting federal as well as internal regulations and procedures, with the ability to adapt to changing needs of the College and business partners.
- Hours include occasional evenings and Saturdays based on operational needs.
- Meets in-person at designated times and locations. Works with multiple students and with other tutors present in a shared space model.
- MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
- Bachelor’s Degree in designated field of study.
- Two (2) years of experience teaching, tutoring, supplemental instruction experience, or equivalent related learning support experience.
- State Motor Vehicle Operator's License or demonstrable ability to gain access to work site(s).
- *An appropriate combination of education, training, coursework and experience may qualify a candidate.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES
Knowledge of: planning and scheduling; computers, software, including cloud applications, to include Microsoft Office applications (Work, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint); advanced subject-matter knowledge; learning techniques; College curriculum and expectations of students; best practices in tutoring students in advanced degreed programs; tutoring programs, and platforms utilized in the classroom.
Skilled in: verbal and written communications; maintaining good public relations; customer service; conflict resolution; general typing; application of job software programs; time management and organization; communicating with a diverse student body; mentoring and providing support for teammates.
Ability to: maintain confidential and sensitive information; engage a variety of tutoring strategies with appropriate sensitivity to students’ learning styles; work with students from diverse social and academic backgrounds and who have special learning needs; become proficient at and implement tutoring software utilized in the department; take appropriate initiative and accept responsibility within the job parameters.

The employee regularly stands and sits for extended periods of time, and occasionally walks. Employee converses verbally with others in person and by telephone. Employee occasionally lifts or exerts force of up to 10 pounds when moving files, boxes and other materials.

- Typical office and classroom environment. Regular exposure to moderate noise typical to business offices.
