Adult Learner Services Office Advisor

Job Duties:

The Adult Learner Services Office Advisor is responsible for ensuring Adult Learner Services Office (ALSO ) students receive the necessary assistance and information to become a successful matriculated student. The Advisor will be responsible for advising the student to ensure that general education requirements and pre-professional requirements are completed. In addition, they will continue to work with each student as they fulfill the requirements for the major.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :

• Represent the University & ALSO at Career Fairs and other recruiting events

• Actively seek recruiting opportunities with business and industry partners

• Advise students ensuring that all general education and pre-professional requirements are completed; continue advising students through the completion of the program

• Communicate with ALSO students on a regular basis and maintain communication log tracking methods of contact with each student

• Assist prospective ALSO students with information about admissions criteria, academic programs, financial aid programs, and learning resources available at Athens State University

• Work with the ALSO Director to develop outreach activities aimed at promoting degree completion

• Advise students on various means of documenting non-traditional credit and assist/guide students through the appropriate process(es)

• Be flexible in advising (appointments, walk-ins, telephone, facsimile, and email)

• Work with the Director to establish recruitment goals and retention goals, as well as annual assessments with specific action plans developed to improve results

• Collect data on students, recruitment, and retention; analyze data, and assist in the Proctor exams in the University Testing Center as needed

• Maintain the security of confidential information, files, and documents

• Comply with all university policies

• Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability to changing work scope and tasks based on need

• Actively work towards building cooperative and collaborative relationships with peers and internal faculty and staff

• Maintain “open door” to internal and external customers

• Identify opportunities for improvements to work practices and offer viable solutions for implementation

• Proactively engage in problem-solving related to tasks in this position with internal and external people

• Routinely practice self-monitoring by assessing self to make improvements or take corrective action to improve performance

• Complete other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED :

• Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution required

• One to three years’ experience in advising students at the postsecondary level

• Ability to put students at ease and create a welcoming low-stress advising environment

• In-depth experience in various computer applications; Banner experience preferred

• Proven ability to learn and retain knowledge of various, and sometimes complex, policies, procedures, and educational processes

• Excellent customer service skills

• Demonstrated knowledge of University admissions and registration process

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS AND JOB REQUIREMENTS :

• This position will have flexible hours to include nights and weekends with some travel. Must attend transfer programs, and recruiting events and make market visits as directed

• Must be willing and able to travel by auto to perform university business

• Must be eligible to meet and maintain auto insurance requirements of the university

• Effective oral and written communication

• Ability to work independently and maintain effective working relationships with others

• Knowledge of the university’s transcript evaluation process and registration procedures

• Must be proactive and a problem-solver

• Possess a strong sense of customer service

• Ability to maintain confidentiality

• Ability to react to change productively

• Flexibility in accomplishing multiple tasks

WORKING CONDITIONS :

• Must be able to remain in a stationary position such as standing and/or sitting for up to 65% of the time

• Occasionally in low postures such as crouching or kneeling for tasks such as filing or event setup

• Must be able to adjust or move objects up to 20 pounds in all directions

• Frequently tasked with repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands, and/or fingers

• This job requires frequent verbal and written communication

• Occasionally operates a motor vehicle for university business

• Occasionally tasked with working after hours including nights and weekends
