Required Education

Master’s degree in Data Science, Statistics, Biostatistics, Computer Science, Epidemiology, Public Health or another quantitative discipline with demonstrated experience supporting research, quality improvement, operational improvement, or healthcare-related analytic initiatives.
OR
Doctoral degree in a quantitative discipline with demonstrated expertise in statistical modeling, machine learning, data science, research methodology, or related analytical fields.

Required Related Experience

• Demonstrated experience conducting statistical analyses, predictive modeling, and quantitative research using large and complex datasets.
• Experience programming in one or more analytical languages such as R, Python, SQL, SAS, or equivalent.
• Experience supporting research, quality improvement, operational improvement, or healthcare-related analytic initiatives.
• Ability to communicate complex analytical findings effectively to clinical, operational, and administrative stakeholders.

Job Summary

The Department of Surgery at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine seeks a highly motivated Data Scientist to support the Division of Surgical Informatics, Analytics, and Data Science in the Research Title Series . This position will partner with surgeons, researchers, quality leaders, and health system stakeholders to develop advanced analytic solutions that improve patient outcomes, operational performance, surgical quality, and research productivity.

The Data Scientist will leverage large-scale clinical, operational, financial, registry, and electronic health record datasets to generate actionable insights, develop predictive models, support quality improvement initiatives, and advance the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning throughout the Department of Surgery.

This position serves as a key member of the Department’s growing analytics and informatics infrastructure and will contribute to clinical operations, quality improvement, translational research, and educational initiatives. This position will be filled by an Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor in the Department of Surgery.

The UK College of Medicine Department of Surgeryis a strong, multidisciplinary team of more than 275people dedicated to advancing Kentucky health care together. Our department encompasses 101faculty members, 118 APPs, 56staff members, and more than 400 learners annually.

The department is home to a broad multidisciplinary scope of surgical practiceand nationally recognized for its contributions to the advancement of clinical care, surgical education, research, and innovations in medical technology.


Each year, providers in the department care for more than 14,000 patients across multipleclinical sites. The department trains 78residents and 10 fellows across 9 accredited programs and 1 unaccredited program, while also contributing to the education of medical students and graduate trainees.

Faculty secure over $6 millionin grant funding annually to pursue cutting-edge research and discoveries, supporting projects in areas such as aging, surgical device development, colorectal cancer, neuroblastoma, oncology, sepsis, thrombosis, and solid organ transplant and transplant rejection. The department has published 152 peer-reviewed articles in the past year and maintains 20 active clinical trials. Multiple biomedical learners, including PhD and master’s students, gain in-depth experience in high-impact research labs.

• Experience working in academic medicine, healthcare systems, clinical research, or translational research environments.
• Experience collaborating with physicians, clinical researchers, quality leaders, or healthcare administrators.
• Experience analyzing clinical, operational, financial, registry, claims, or population health data.
• Experience supporting grants, scientific publications, presentations, and research protocols.
• Record of scholarly productivity, including peer-reviewed publications, funded research, or national presentations.
• Experience developing dashboards, reports, data visualizations, or decision-support tools.
• Familiarity with electronic health record data sources, clinical registries, data warehouses, or healthcare informatics platforms.
• Experience teaching, mentoring, or providing analytical consultation to faculty, trainees, and staff.
