General Summary

Assist General Counsel in administering and coordinating the delivery of legal services for the University.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Assist General Counsel in administering all institutional legal affairs.

Act as primary University legal contact and representation for labor and employment issues, including administrative complaints, grievances, mediations, and arbitrations.

Act as primary legal counsel for EMU management on collective bargaining agreements.

Review, draft, and approve University contracts and institutional policies.

Provide legal counseling and assistance to various University departments in all aspects of business and higher education law.

Assist General Counsel in coordinating the delivery of legal services to the University by outside legal counsel.

Represent the University in judicial or quasi-judicial proceedings on the University's behalf, including labor and employment matters and other matters as assigned.

Perform related departmental duties as required and/or assigned by the General Counsel.

Minimum Qualifications:

A law degree and admission to the Michigan Bar is required.

A minimum of eight years of experience in active legal practice, with a focus on labor and employment law, is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in litigation, contract negotiation, and business-related matters is preferred.

Previous higher education experience is preferred.

Special Instructions:

This position is fully in-person on EMU's main campus.
