Job Summary

Over the past 30 years, the University of Kentucky Center for Applied Energy Research [CAER] has

built up an outstanding research program directed to high-value carbon materials derived from coal and petroleum resources such as pitches, binders, cokes, activated carbons, fibers and composites.

CAER is staffing up its carbon materials program and seeks an Associate Research Scientist. The

person will be primarily responsible for developing and optimizing battery chemistries using

coal-derived carbon as the electrode material. The position will involve experimental work in

electrochemistry and device-level testing for various energy storage systems.

The key responsibilities include 1. Conduct fundamental research on coal-derived carbon as the

electrode material for energy storage applications, 2. Design, fabricate and test battery cells

(coin and pouch) to evaluate electrochemical performance 3.

Develop electrochemical methods to better understand the performance and degradation mechanisms of coal-derived carbon electrode materials, 4. Characterize materials pre- and post-cycling using advanced analytical tools (e.g., XRD, XPS, SEM, TEM, EIS, CV),5. Maintain lab protocols and safety procedures, 6. Assist PI with writing reports and preparing

technical presentations for sponsors, 7. Present research findings at conferences and publish in

peer-reviewed journals, 8. Collaborate with internal and external researchers and stay informed

with advancement of research in the field of carbon-based electrodes for energy storage

applications.

Skills / Knowledge / Abilities

Characteristics of Job. This is the intermediate level – developing, maturing professional – requiring a master’s degree in chemistry or other physical sciences or equivalent experience related to the area of specialization. Independently evaluates, selects and applies standardized analytical procedures and techniques; scopes tasks, develops approaches for moderately difficult tasks. Assignments have clear and specified objectives, and require the investigation of a limited number of variables. Incumbent relies on limited experience and exercises judgment within defined procedures and practices in making minor adaptations and modifications. Interacts in a collaborative manner with other team members to accomplish organizational goals; provides ideas to improve efficiency at group level. Continues to enhance capabilities for project planning, including assessment of cost, scope and schedule against plan. Performance at this level requires developmental experience in a professional position, or equivalent graduate level education.
