Business Unit/Role Specific Info
The Portfolio Management internship at American Express is an exciting opportunity for someone who wants to help shape experiences for one of the world’s top brands! Portfolio Management supports tracking and reporting the portfolio delivery progress and ensures that the project and portfolio data are accurately maintained and aligned with financial and resource targets.
Our 10-week Summer Internship Program runs from June to August. This program will provide you with real, on-the-job work experience; giving you the skills and experience to help you accelerate in your studies and future career!
How will you make an impact in this role?
- Utilizes reporting tools to monitor and track portfolio performance against delivery, cost, budget, forecast, schedule, and quality targets, ensuring accurate and timely reporting that supports decision-making processes
- Assist in designing, automating, and optimizing business reporting and dashboards to support operational efficiency
- Collect, clean, and analyze data from multiple systems to identify trends and insights that inform strategic decisions
- Support process automation initiatives
- Develop and maintain key performance indicator (KPI) reports and automate recurring data workflows
- Present findings and recommendations in a clear, data-backed narrative to technical and non-technical audiences
- Supports financial tracking of projects and portfolios using data from the Enterprise Portfolio Management System, ensuring financial data integrity and aiding in budget management, with guidance from peers and leaders
- Supports compilation and distribution of portfolio-level status reports to internal stakeholders and seniors, providing clear and concise updates that facilitate informed decision-making
- Contributes to the reconciliation of portfolio funding and forecasts to ensure financial accuracy, identifying and addressing any discrepancies to maintain budget alignment
- Provides administrative support to project management resources for system updates and maintenance, ensuring data consistency and reliability
- Administers portfolio-level risk, issue, and change control procedures, effectively managing potential impacts on project delivery under the guidance of colleagues
- Collaborate with business stakeholders to understand requirements and translate them into analytical solutions
- Collaborates and co-creates effectively with teams in product and the business to align technology initiatives with business objectives
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree candidates with an expected graduation date between December 2026 and June 2027
- Currently enrolled in full-time Bachelor’s degree program in Business Administration, Finance and Information Technology
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with data analysis tools (e.g., Excel, SQL, Python, R, Tableau, or Power BI)
- Exposure to automation platforms or scripting languages for process improvement
- Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and curiosity for understanding complex systems
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work independently and in collaborative team environments
- Develop and maintain key performance indicator (KPI) reports and automate recurring data workflows
- Collaborate with business stakeholders to understand requirements and translate them into analytical solutions
- Proven interest in technologies and customer-driven design
- Experience in technology project management, portfolio management, project management, or a related field within a technology or financial services environment
- Experience with Enterprise Portfolio Management Systems (e.g., Clarity PPM, Microsoft Project Online)
- Experience in budgeting and financial planning
- Knowledge of financial management tools and principles, Data Analytics, Financial Modeling, and Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC)
Salary Range: $24.05 to $63.00 hourly + sign-on bonus
