Department Overview

The Outpatient Dietitian for the Center for Women’s Health, provides Medical Nutrition Therapy to OHSU, CWH patients referred for MNT. As a Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist working as a member of a multi-disciplinary team, this position also has the primary responsibility for providing diabetes education and MNT for patients diagnosed with GDM.

Function/Duties of Position

Deliver Diabetes Education:

  • Assess, interpret, develop, implement, evaluate and document plan of care for each patient
  • Detail the diabetes self-care plan including nutrition prescription
  • Review diabetes meal-planning approach and develop or adjust individualized diabetes meal plan as indicated
  • Patient education and training on self-blood glucose monitoring, detailing when to check and what blood sugar goals are for pregnancy
  • May educate patients on use of CGM’s during pregnancy and assist with implementing this tool
  • May refer to OHSU Diabetes & Pregnancy Clinic as needed
  • May educate patients about the use of pharmacotherapy during pregnancy to help with blood sugar optimization
  • May provide instruction on medication delivery systems such as insulin flex pens, storage, administration, sharps disposal, hypoglycemic management etc
  • May implement pharmacotherapy plan using provider-approved protocols (DAPP guidelines) consistent with facility policies
  • May recommend adjustments to pharmacotherapy based on integration of nutrition, physical activity, medication, meter and/or CGM data and progression of insulin resistance with pregnancy
  • Provide Medical Nutrition Therapy for general OB/GYN and high-risk OB issues utilizing OHSU Food & Nutrition suggested guidelines as well as AND, ADA MNT Protocols as appropriate
  • Provide clinical nutrition assessment, document nutrition diagnosis and nutrition intervention plan and outcome goals and monitor progress towards these outcomes
  • Maintain appropriate and timely documentation on all patient encounters including completion of billing process
  • Manage CWH nutrition referral queue, contacting and scheduling patients in a timely manner
  • Develop nutrition education materials, lectures and classes as needed, including for patients, OHSU providers and the greater community

Required Qualifications
  • A Bachelor’s degree with specialization in dietetics, nutrition, institution management, or a closely-related field and completion of a pre-planned professional experience in dietetics at a facility approved by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND).
  • Registered Dietitian/Registered Dietitian Nutritionist with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR)
  • Licensed Dietitian in the state of Oregon
  • The specialist must have documentation of successful completion of a specialty certification examination and maintain requirements for maintaining specialist credential. In some circumstances a 1-year window to maintain a specialist credential via a specialty certification examination may be extended.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree preferred- will consider relevant degree
  • 5+ years of recent experience working in direct patient care And
  • 1+ years working in direct patient care with OB population And
  • 1+ years of direct experience working with patients diabetes
  • Sound clinical foundation in all aspects of nutrition; strong communication and interpersonal skills; good organizational behaviors and ability to multi-task with an interdisciplinary team; self-motivated and able to function independently; good computer skills

Additional Details
  • 4 to 5 day work week, hours may vary
  • Ability to work at a computer for up to 2 hours at a time
