This team member will be an integral member of the CA&C team supporting the American Express Global Commercial Services (GCS) division. GCS provides a wide portfolio of payments solutions and expertise to support businesses of all sizes across their many needs. The GCS division serves millions of business customers around the world - whether through corporate or small business cards, expense management tools, working capital, or financing solutions. 

This role is responsible for driving external communications and counseling key business executives, leading new and creative opportunities to drive news about GCS initiatives; creating and executing proactive media and influencer marketing strategies; directing and owning external communications strategies; and managing issues to protect and enhance the American Express brand. This role specifically focuses on externally communicating the value of American Express Business Membership and how Amex is a trusted partner to businesses of all sizes, across industries and in the U.S. This includes leading product launches and refreshes, thought leadership on business trends and challenges, partner and co-brand campaigns, and research. 

The Manager will serve as a company spokesperson and work alongside GCS executives and their teams. This role will report to the U.S.-based vice president, Corporate Affairs & Communications overseeing the GCS communications strategy, and will collaborate closely with colleagues that support internal colleague communications, marketing, client management and partnerships. 

Responsibilities:

  • Support the business goals of GCS by creating compelling communications programs and campaigns with a particular focus on articulating the value we provide to businesses of all sizes and across all industries.
  • Identify story ideas and creative opportunities, drafting messaging tailored for specific audiences, announcements, and channels.
  • Create and execute influencer campaigns on Amex and third-party social media channels, spotlighting business owners and their stories.
  • Counsel GCS executives and support their external communications needs, including preparations for press interviews, speaking engagements, and their LinkedIn presence – e.g. advising on the right content for the channel and writing copy.
  • Collaborate closely with internal colleagues to assess and prepare for public engagements, along with including relevant GCS messaging in Amex-wide announcements.
  • Develop strong relationships with press and industry stakeholders to promote GCS advancements and executive perspectives. 
  • Stay on top of emerging media trends and opportunities to reach relevant audiences.
  • Support issues preparedness and management with senior oversight, drafting reactive messaging, making recommendations on communications strategy, and fielding media queries.
  • Monitor competitor and industry-level activities, including advancements in payments and small, medium, and large business trends, contextualizing news to senior business leaders as relevant.
  • Lead and compile weekly, monthly, and quarterly reporting documents to showcase communications results to key stakeholders across the business.
  • Manage projects end-to-end with high quality and professionalism, including gathering input and approvals across key stakeholders.
  • Deliver strong results that align with the GCS business strategy.
  • Ability to pivot and problem-solve as projects develop, escalating as needed.
  • Capable of working independently and as part of a team.
  • Be a strong mentor and team player, helping to support the larger team.
  • Demonstrate strong, decisive judgment to protect and promote the American Express brand.
  • Help manage U.S.-based PR agency.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of public relations experience, with established ability to manage multiple priorities in a deadline-driven work environment.
  • Strong strategic and creative thinking with proven experience leading winning communications strategies and plansacross a mix of channels (earned, social, owned, paid), with an eye on the evolving media and digital landscape.
  • Demonstrate superior written and verbal and communication skills and a proven track record of media relations results.
  • Experience counseling executives with a high level of professionalism, supporting their external and internal communications needs while also mitigating risk appropriately.
  • Familiarity with brand reputation and crisis comms/issues management, including scenario planning, reactive message development, media relations, and monitoring.
  • Proven ability to quickly learn and absorb complex and technical subjects and translate material into comprehensive and easy-to-understand communications messages.
  • Meticulous attention to detail, strong project management skills and sound judgement.
  • Ability to adhere to rigorous policies, and deal with confidential information without exception.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Business-savvy communications expert with meaningful experience in payments, finance, technology, business-to-business, fintech, or other relevant industry.
  • Collaborative and empathetic team player.
  • Creativity in developing and managing stories with national, local, and trade press.
  • Proven experience in managing PR agencies and/or teams; agency experience a plus.

Salary Range: $89,250.00 to $150,250.00 annually + bonus + benefits
