Job Summary
This is a full-time, fiscal year permanent position within the Department of Advising and Career Services, reporting to the Director of Advising and Career Services.
This position provides comprehensive academic guidance and advising services to student veterans on policies, procedures, and program requirements to fulfill a certificate or degree program. The incumbent will support student veterans in developing academic goals and educational plans, including certifying educational benefits to help them achieve those goals as they transition at various points throughout their academic career at Southwest.
This position requires a minimum of 37.5 hours per week. Additional hours may be required. Travel will be required between campus locations.
Job Duties
- Coordinates and monitors the day-to-day operations for the Office of Veterans Affairs and veteran student services; interprets, explains and implements policies and procedures to certify students for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) educational benefits in accordance with federal and state guidelines.
- Educates prospective students on VA benefits and educational opportunities at SWCC.
- Monitors veteran students’ academic progress, and student course enrollment to verify that courses meet program and graduation requirements.
- Implements student strategies designed to encourage the success and retention of veteran students.
- Ensures program activities are in compliance with regulations, policies, and procedures for the Tennessee State Approving Agency; provides information in support of audits and compliance surveys.
- Serves as liaison and resource for veteran affairs in support of utilizing community resources, securing employment opportunities, and obtaining counseling services offered thru internal and external Veteran Administration services.
- Plans, coordinates and implements campus-wide, veteran focused events, outreach and related training activities; serves as the advisor for the Student Veterans Organization (SVO).
- Collaborates with PLA Coordinator to offer Veterans-specific programming towards Prior Learning Assessment Credit.
- Prepares and maintains student records and files for reporting purposes.
- Creates appropriate communications, informational material, and media correspondence to promote services and events.
- Performs other duties as related to the primary job duties.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in education, counseling, human services or related field from an accredited institution OR An equivalent combination of certification, education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree from an accredited college or university.
- 1-3 years Advising experience in a community college setting working directly with Veterans, or other specialized population.
- Experience in certifying veterans.
- Experience working with students at a post-secondary institution
- Knowledge of G.I. Bill/VA educational benefits
