The University of Kentucky College of Design seeks a dynamic Design Technology Specialist to join our innovative team supporting the next generation of designers, architects, and creative professionals. This critical role combines technical expertise with educational impact, ensuring our students and faculty have seamless access to state-of-the-art digital fabrication and output technologies.

About This Opportunity

As our Design Technology Specialist, you’ll be the technical backbone supporting a diverse community of creators across Architecture, Product Design, Interior Design, Historic Preservation, and Landscape Architecture programs. You’ll manage all digital output operations for the College of Design—from large-format 2D plotting to sophisticated 3D printing—while providing expert technical support in a collaborative academic environment.


What You’ll Do


Digital Fabrication Leadership (25%)
  • Operate and maintain large-format HP plotters and extensive 3D printer fleet
  • Train faculty and students on CAD/CAM software and digital fabrication workflows
  • Ensure safety compliance and proper equipment usage across all programs
  • Troubleshoot complex technical issues and coordinate equipment repairs

Customer Service & Resource Coordination (35%)
  • Provide technical support focused on digital output operations and design workflows
  • Manage equipment checkout systems and maintain accurate inventory records
  • Coordinate with College Business Office for equipment and materials procurement
  • Serve as primary liaison between users and technical resources
  • Direct general IT support requests to appropriate university resources

Facility & Equipment Maintenance (25%)
  • Perform routine maintenance on sophisticated digital output equipment
  • Serve as first point of contact for technology helpdesk requests
  • Process work orders and coordinate repairs with vendors
  • Monitor supplies and equipment to ensure continuous operation

Team Leadership (15%)
  • Management & Training of student workers in technical operations and customer service
  • Foster collaborative learning environment promoting safety and excellence
  • Provide regular feedback and professional development opportunities
  • Support inclusive practices that engage diverse backgrounds and abilities

Preferred Education/Experience

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree OR Associate’s degree with 2+ years relevant experience
  • Experience with digital output equipment and design software workflows
  • Strong customer service and communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse academic community
  • Demonstrated problem-solving abilities


Highly Preferred:
  • 3D printing expertise (FDM, SLA, or similar technologies)
  • Knowledge of design software (Rhino, AutoCAD, SolidWorks, etc.)
  • PaperCut print management system experience
  • Mac and PC technical support background
  • Previous work in academic or educational technology environments
  • Experience supervising student workers or teams
