Job Description
Job Summary:
The EdRedesign Lab at Harvard Graduate School of Education: Founded in 2014 by Paul Reville, Francis Keppel Professor of Practice of Educational Policy and Administration at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, EdRedesign provides catalytic support to the cradle-to-career place-based partnership field to drive systems-level change and open personalized pathways to well-being, educational attainment, civic engagement, and upward mobility. To support this growing field to effect transformational change that serves the needs and talents of individual children and youth, our work focuses on talent development, actionable research, our Institute for Success Planning, and our By All Means initiatives. Our mission is to ensure the social, emotional, physical, and academic development and well-being of all children and youth, especially those affected by racism, poverty, and disinvestment.
Reporting to EdRedesign’s Deputy Director & Director of the Institute for Success Planning, the Director of Applied Data and Community Insights will be responsible for implementing a comprehensive data and evaluation strategy for EdRedesign’s two interconnected focus areas: i) personalized-relationship based supports and ii) place-based cross-sector collaboration.
Job-Specific Responsibilities:
Strategic Data and Evaluation Support to EdRedesign’s Flagship Community-Facing Programs
- Lead the development and implementation of robust data and evaluation systems for EdRedesign’s flagship community-facing programs and talent development initiatives including: the Institute for Success Planning Community of Practice, EdRedesign Fellowship for Cradle-to-Career Partnership Leaders, and By All Means Senior Fellows
- Develop tools and materials to support local communities in using data and to lead an internal effort to identify the most useful metrics to track impact
- Spearhead the design of comprehensive strategies for the identification and utilization of data and metrics as part of locally led cross-sector collaborations and Success Planning initiatives
- Independently design data analyses, developing tools, dashboards, and other data visualizations to enable partner communities, backbone organizations, and place-based partnerships to use and track data and impact; identify relevant technologies to streamline the effectiveness of EdRedesign’s data and evaluation efforts for community-facing programs.
- Build trusting relationships with senior leaders and relevant data and evaluation staff within partner communities and organizations
- Identify opportunities for collaboration with relevant Harvard-based and national entities to support community-facing programming
- Identify key gaps in EdRedesign partner community data and evaluation practices and opportunities for capacity-building, professional development, and sector-wide efficiencies
- Periodically present key findings and briefings on partner community impact to internal and external audiences as a part of EdRedesign’s field and movement building efforts.
- Contribute to EdRedesign funding proposals related to strengthening data, evaluation, and learning support to communities
Integration and Alignment across EdRedesign Departments and External Engagements
- Work in close partnership with all EdRedesign departments, programs and initiatives to ensure effective integration and alignment on topics related to applied data, evaluation and community learning
- Work in close collaboration with EdRedesign’s research and communications departments to develop external-facing publications and materials on the work of the organization’s signature community-facing programs
- Work in close collaboration with EdRedesign’s research department and research affiliates to position the needs and opportunities for partnership with practitioners in the field and their organizations
- Support EdRedesign’s research team on implementation activities related to EdRedesign’s Data and Evaluation Working Group that brings together data and evaluation leads from national partner organizations and leading place-based partnerships; participate in Data and Evaluation Working Group meetings and build trusting relationships with Working Group members
- Provide occasional strategic support to EdRdesign’s research translation efforts focused on engaging non-technical audiences on EdRedesign’s sponsored research projects; build trusting relationships with EdRedesign’s research partners and affiliates
- Contribute to the development of EdRedesign sponsored papers, reports, and cases for external publication
- Contribute to EdRedesign funding proposals for relevant signature initiatives and external engagements
Special Projects
- Support the execution of EdRedesign’s special projects related to applied data innovations in collaboration with national and community partners
Participate in related national working groups, steering committees, and related field-wide efforts related to data, evaluation, and emerging technologies
Working Conditions:
This position works a combination of on-campus and remote work based on business needs and manager approval. The opportunity for 100% remote work is available. All remote work must be performed within a state in which Harvard is registered to do business (CA, CT, GA, IL, MA, MD, ME, NH, NJ, NY, RI, VA, VT and WA). Candidates residing in other states are also encouraged to apply, though would become employees of a third-party external payroll company rather than Harvard University.
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications:
- Master’s degree or equivalent
- A minimum of 8 years in related experience
- Experience in quantitative analysis
- Ability to travel as needed

Additional Qualifications and Skills:
- Strong oral, written, and interpersonal skills
- Previous experience with a focus in applied quantitative analysis, data and evaluation within social sector programs and initiatives
- Experience working with non-technical audiences, practitioners, and policymakers to adopt and/or implement effective data strategies
- Experience leading data and evaluation programming within a cross-sector collaboration focused on issues related to education, cradle-to-career solutions, health, place-based initiatives, and/or related topics
- A demonstrated facility working with data sets and analyzing quantitative data and the ability to communicate complex information to various audiences
- Strong facility with knowledge management, data visualization and CRM systems
- A demonstrated passion for using data to support social impact, youth development, and/or education-related initiatives
- The ability to represent EdRedesign, the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and Harvard University professionally both internally and externally
- Ability to travel for national field-building events, funder meetings, and related programming and national events
- Ability to work with a team effectively across different projects
- Experience with data sharing agreements and related institutional arrangements that promote cross-sector collaboration to improve child and youth outcomes through innovative data practices
- Experience with leveraging state longitudinal data systems to facilitate research collaborations and accelerate community impact
- Experience briefing policymakers and high-profile audiences on data, evaluation, and community learning analyses
- Experience managing student fellows, research assistants, interns, consultants, and related affiliates
- Adaptive leadership experience working with multiple constituencies, including community-based non-profit organizations, philanthropies and major donors, academic partners, and for-profit businesses to align on common goals and outcomes
- Ability to work with a team effectively across different projects and work streams
- Ability to work independently, analyze problems, and develop practical solutions
- Experience with mixed methods and qualitative research methods

Work Format Details
This is a position that is based at a Harvard campus location with some remote work options available. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. All remote work must be performed within one of the Harvard Registered Payroll States, which currently includes Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, Washington, and California (CA for exempt positions only). Certain visa types and funding sources may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.
