Job Description

General Statement of Duties: The Director for External Education is responsible for managing Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM)’s portfolio of non-degree external education program offerings including all online, in-person, and blended programs. This role involves strategic planning, program development, and ensuring the quality and impact of programs are aligned to the American Dental Association’s Commission for Continuing Education Provider Recognition standard (ADA CERP) standard of excellence. The incumbent will collaborate and foster relationships with internal and external constituents to develop and enhance programming that is highly desired and aligned with financial and academic institutional goals.

Essential Responsibilities

  1. Provides strategic direction and management of all external education offerings; is expected to consistently meet or exceed annual and long-term revenue generation goals.
  2. Shapes comprehensive courses and programs to meet the interests and needs of Harvard dental clinical practice, research, and education communities and external constituents such as Harvard Medical School and the Harvard Business School, as well global stakeholders and alumni for external education programming.
  3. Represents HSDM at external education events as needed.
  4. Responsible for the accreditation of the external education programs, including compliance with all federal and state regulations, accreditation standards, and Harvard policies and procedures.
  5. Consistently evaluates external education offerings to measure their impact and make necessary adjustments; oversees and/or conducts implementation of programmatic changes; collaborates with faculty, course directors, administrative personnel, and senior leadership.
  6. Assesses and implements methodologies for developing outcomes assessment.
  7. Works in collaboration with HSDM’s Communications and Marketing Office to leverage existing print and digital channels for course advertising and ensure compliance with brand standards and Harvard trademark and use-of-name policies.
  8. Works in collaboration with HSDM’s Development and Alumni Relations and Director of Corporate Relations to leverage existing and development of new corporate and foundation relationships to support external education programming.
  9. Coordinates and collaborates with the HSDM Committee for External Education and leads all the associated strategic and tactical external education committees.
  10. Develops, manages, and mentors staff, oversees and assigns work, encourages professional development and evaluates performance on a consistent basis.
  11. Serves on School and University committees and task forces, as assigned.
  12. Contributes to the mission and vision of HSDM and models the School’s core values in all facets of the work.
  13. Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

Working Conditions:

  1. Work is performed in a typical office setting.
  2. Attendance at events may be required, some of which may occur during non-business hours.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  1. Master’s Degree or higher
  2. At least 10 years of relevant experience.
  3. Experience conceiving and executing academically rigorous and timely external education programs.
  4. Excellent organizational, interpersonal, communication, and writing skills.
  5. An innovative mindset, an entrepreneurial outlook, and the ability to conceive of market, and implement an exciting global vision, in collaboration with Harvard Dental and partnering schools or institutions (e.g., Harvard Business School, Medical School).
  6. Experience in running programs to promote a strong sustainable model from a financial standpoint.
  7. Ability work onsite on a regular basis, including some evening and weekend hours for programs and events.
  8. Ability to successfully pass a comprehensive background and credit check at hire.

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  1. Background as a dental faculty member and/or highly familiar with external dental education programs.
  2. Experience with running both traditional lecture-based in-person and remote external education programs as well as “hands-on” courses that may include surgery, digital dentistry, biomedical imaging, artificial intelligence, or other arenas pertinent to dentistry.
  3. Technology skills relevant to the work.

Additional Information
  • Standard Hours/Schedule: 35 hours per week
  • Compensation Range/Rate (including Shift Differential if applicable): $150,000-$165,000 annual

Work Format Details

This is a position that is based at a Harvard campus location with some remote work options available. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. All remote work must be performed within one of the Harvard Registered Payroll States, which currently includes Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, Washington, and California (CA for exempt positions only). Certain visa types and funding sources may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.

Salary Grade and Ranges
