Job Summary

  • The Director of ICU provides strategic and operational leadership for the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Progressive Care Unit (PCU), and Dialysis services. This position ensures high-quality, patient-centered care by directing nursing staff, coordinating interdepartmental collaboration, and ensuring compliance with all applicable standards, regulations, and best practices.

Essential Functions

  • Direct and guide daily operations in ICU/PCU/Dialysis to ensure quality and safety of care
  • Prepare and manage department staffing schedules based on census and acuity
  • Supervise and evaluate nursing personnel and recommend or take disciplinary action as needed
  • Oversee performance improvement, regulatory compliance, and incident report investigations
  • Lead development of policies, procedures, and clinical practice standards
  • Develop and manage department budgets to ensure cost-effective care delivery
  • Provide direct patient care as necessary to maintain high-quality outcomes
  • Participate in hospital-wide committees and initiatives aligned with clinical goals
  • Maintain up-to-date job descriptions and ensure timely staff performance evaluations
  • Support community outreach and education initiatives related to wellness and care
  • Serve as a role model of professionalism and evidence-based practice in nursing leadership

  • Strong critical thinking, decision-making, and leadership abilities
  • Ability to collaborate across departments and disciplines to ensure multidisciplinary patient care
  • Frequently: Standing, walking, pushing/pulling, reaching, handling
  • Occasionally: Sitting, stooping, lifting up to 50 pounds
  • Constant: Seeing, hearing, communication, and manual dexterity
  • Regular exposure to blood, body fluids, and biohazards
  • Potential exposure to airborne particles, toxic chemicals, mechanical equipment, and loud noise
  • Works in a clinical hospital environment with patient contact

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required
  • Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) preferred

Licenses/Certifications

  • Current RN licensure in the state of employment (or Compact State if residing outside the state)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) – required upon hire and maintained
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) – required within 6 months of hire and maintained
  • Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) – required within 6 months and annually thereafter
  • Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN) – may be required per facility policy
  • Certified Professional in-Patient Safety (CPPS) – may be required per facility policy

Experience

  • Minimum of 3–5 years of nursing management experience preferred
  • Experience working in high-acuity and fast-paced environments
