Job Description
The Director of Marketing is a strategic leader responsible for planning, developing, and executing comprehensive marketing strategies to drive enrollment, increase brand awareness, engage the target audience and maintain and grow the Program on Negotiation (PON)’s position as a global leader in negotiation, conflict resolution and mediation.
This leadership role requires expertise in the development of engaging content, web site management and optimization, email and digital marketing, budgeting and forecasting, and team and agency management.
The Director of Marketing works as a member of the PON Leadership Team to shape and implement multi-channel strategies that maximize educational impact for participants, attain or exceed revenue goals and overall financial contribution.
As a Director of Marketing, you will:
- Provide effective leadership and administration, working both externally with a network of stakeholders including web developers, analysts, digital and email marketing, editors, design and copywriters, as well as internally with colleagues across all areas of PON’s activity.
- Work with PON’s program delivery teams to secure program dates, launch schedules, and deadlines for web and materials development.
- Develop, maintain and monitor marketing budgets and financial performance.
- Work closely with the web development team to ensure consistency, quality control and optimum availability for the website. Optimize system uptime, safety and security and with the Harvard Office of the General Counsel to ensure that the website complies with evolving security and safety. Explore adding new content frameworks as required to keep the website current and accessible.
- Manage the creation and development of timely and engaging content to support PON’s editorial newsletter program. Determine new content needs based on analytics that drive traffic to the website. Coordinate with all PON stakeholder’s website content related to programs, and mission as required.
- Define and execute comprehensive email marketing strategies aligned with overall marketing and business goals. Work with external agencies¿to oversee the creation, scheduling, testing, and deployment of email campaigns, including promotional, and editorial emails.
- Work with external agencies to maximize paid advertising to develop ad campaigns, expand the proprietary database, and reach or exceed target acquisition goals. Develop brochures with external agency, email communications, event collateral, swag, trade show displays and any other visual or written content to promote PON programs.
- Run systems analysis, coordinating with external web team on updating and development of all analytics required for optimal system operation and optimization of all email, web and social media inventory.
- Provide strategic support by conducting competitive market research and assisting with new program development and program improvements, as well as collaborating on marketing and outreach strategies to expand enrollment and visibility. Evaluate program outcomes and recommend improvements to curriculum and delivery.
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree with 8 years of progressive marketing management experience.
Additional Qualifications and Skills

- Experience managing external agencies to reach business goals.
- Experience working in an academic setting with a strong knowledge or interest in negotiation theories and practice a plus.
- Exceptional written and verbal communications skills. Ability to manage, write and review content to be used in all marketing materials.

Appointment End Date: This is a one-year term appointment with potential for renewal, subject to departmental funding and need.

Work Format Details
This is a position that is based at a Harvard campus location with some remote work options available. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. All remote work must be performed within one of the Harvard Registered Payroll States, which currently includes Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, Washington, and California (CA for exempt positions only). Certain visa types and funding sources may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.
