Equipment Operator

Job Summary:

The Equipment Operator is responsible for safely and efficiently supporting asphalt plant operations through a combination of loader and other mobile equipment operation and ground-person duties. This position operates loaders and other equipment to move, stockpile, and feed aggregate materials while also performing hands-on plant duties to support production, maintenance, housekeeping, and material flow. The Equipment Operator performs routine equipment and plant inspections, assists with maintenance and repairs, and works collaboratively with plant personnel to maintain safe, continuous, and efficient asphalt production.

Essential Functions:

  1. Safety always wins. Create and maintain a zero-incident work environment while performing both mobile equipment operation and ground-person duties throughout the asphalt plant. Take personal responsibility for safety by wearing required personal protective equipment (PPE), conducting inspections, identifying and addressing hazards, and consistently following company policies and applicable OSHA, MSHA, and other regulatory safety requirements.
  2. Determined. Safely and efficiently operate a front-end loader and other assigned mobile equipment to move, stockpile, blend, and load aggregate materials and maintain an efficient flow of materials throughout the plant.
  3. Committed to serve. Feed aggregate materials into plant bins, hoppers, conveyors, and other processing equipment to support continuous asphalt production and prevent interruptions in material supply.
  4. Results matter. Perform ground-person duties throughout the asphalt plant, including monitoring material flow, clearing material buildup, cleaning around conveyors and production equipment, maintaining work areas, and assisting with other hands-on plant operations as needed.
  5. Perform pre-operational and post-operational inspections of loaders and other assigned equipment and document findings to ensure equipment readiness and compliance with safety standards.
  6. Ownership and caring. Inspect plant and mobile equipment for potential issues and identify, report, and assist in resolving equipment malfunctions, maintenance needs, material blockages, and other operational concerns to minimize downtime.
  7. Measurement. Monitor stockpiles, aggregate supply, material flow, and plant operating conditions and adjust work activities as necessary to maintain product quality and production efficiency.
  8. Obligated. Support plant housekeeping by maintaining clean and organized production areas, roadways, stockpiles, conveyors, equipment areas, and other workspaces. Perform shoveling, sweeping, and material cleanup as necessary.
  9. Safety. Follow established traffic patterns, lockout/tagout procedures, plant procedures, and safe operating practices while working around mobile equipment, conveyors, hot materials, and other asphalt plant operations.
  10. Humility. Assist maintenance personnel with plant and equipment servicing, repairs, inspections, and scheduled shutdown activities as needed.
  11. Results matter. Complete required production, equipment inspection, maintenance, and operational records accurately and timely.
  12. Protect family and friends. Participate in safety meetings, training programs, and continuous improvement initiatives and communicate hazards, equipment concerns, and operational issues to appropriate plant personnel.


Requirements, Education and Experience:

  1. High school diploma or GED preferred.
  2. One to three years of experience operating front-end loaders or other heavy equipment in an asphalt plant, quarry, construction, or similar industrial environment preferred.
  3. Knowledge of safe equipment operation, aggregate handling, material flow, stockpile management, and asphalt plant operations preferred.
  4. Ability and willingness to perform a combination of mobile equipment operation and hands-on ground-person duties to support plant production.
  5. Ability to inspect equipment, identify and communicate mechanical or operational issues, and assist with routine maintenance, troubleshooting, and plant cleanup.
  6. Ability to read, understand, and follow operational procedures, equipment manuals, and applicable safety and environmental requirements.
  7. Strong attention to safety, quality, and productivity with the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  8. Valid driver's license required.
  9. Ability to complete required company and regulatory safety training upon hire.
  10. Authorized to work in the U.S.

Work Environment/Physical Demands:

This position requires prolonged sitting while operating mobile equipment as well as frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, crouching, reaching, and climbing while performing ground-person duties. Employees must be able to safely climb into and out of equipment and navigate stairs, ladders, platforms, and uneven plant surfaces. The role requires frequent use of hand tools and shovels, including performing material cleanup and other physically demanding plant tasks, and regularly lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling up to 50 pounds, with assistance or mechanical means used for heavier items.
