The Fraud Risk Analyst I reports to the Fraud Manager and supports AutoNation Finance’s fraud prevention efforts by reviewing applications, identifying potential fraud indicators, and assisting in investigations related to automotive lending. This role focuses on analyzing data, monitoring activity for suspicious patterns, and following established fraud procedures to help reduce losses. The analyst will support senior team members with case reviews, documentation, and escalation of findings. Strong attention to detail, communication skills, and basic analytical abilities are essential for this position.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND EXPECTATIONS

Support and contribute to the work of the Risk Department specifically assuming duties including the following:

  • Review loan applications flagged for increased risk of synthetic identity theft, traditional identity theft, Bust Out and other forms of fraud
  • Conduct detailed analysis of high-risk applications, including verification of customer information, document validation, and analysis of third-party fraud detection tools
  • Utilize fraud scoring systems and internal data to identify patterns and red flags indicative of identity theft
  • Collaborate with the Underwriting team to provide insights and recommendations on applications with heightened fraud risk
  • Perform thorough background checks and research using public records, credit reports, and other relevant sources to assess the legitimacy of applicant information
  • Stay current on emerging fraud trends and techniques, particularly in synthetic identity fraud, and update procedures and analysis techniques as necessary
  • Review EPD and FPD charge-offs for potential buyback and understanding of current fraud trends/exposure
  • Document findings and maintain detailed case files on investigated applications for audit and reporting purposes
  • Provide recommendations for process improvements to enhance fraud detection at the front-end of the application process
  • Assist in the development and implementation of training materials and fraud awareness programs for underwriters and other relevant teams
  • Report to senior management on key fraud trends, patterns, and mitigation strategies
  • Assist in reviewing transactions and basic trend analysis to detect suspicious patterns.
  • Assist in preparing case summaries, documentation, and reports used by management for decision-making.
  • Follow fraud mitigation procedures and support compliance with internal policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate with credit, funding, and collections teams to gather information and clarify discrepancies.
  • Maintain accurate records of fraud reviews and ensure timely updates in fraud tracking systems.
  • Participate in team meetings, training sessions, and ongoing education related to fraud detection and regulatory guidelines.
  • Provide professional communication to internal stakeholders regarding findings and documentation needs.

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Intermediate analytical and data-review skills with the ability to identify inconsistencies or anomalies in application details or documentation.
  • Foundational understanding of auto finance processes or willingness to learn industry fraud patterns.
  • Ability to examine loan applications and supporting documents for potential misrepresentation.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, and written documentation skills.
  • Clear communication skills with the ability to provide concise summaries or ask clarifying questions.
  • Ability to work well within a team and collaborate across business units when gathering information.
  • Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft 365 (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Teams).
  • Ability to follow procedures, exercise sound judgment, and know when to escalate concerns.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with multiple competing priorities.
  • Interest in developing stronger analytical, risk assessment, and fraud-detection capabilities.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Business, Criminal Justice, or a related field preferred
  • 2+ years of experience in fraud detection, risk management, or a related role in financial services
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret and analyze large amounts of data.
  • Familiarity with fraud detection tools and software, including fraud scoring models and credit bureau data
  • Knowledge of synthetic identity theft, traditional identity theft, and other common fraud tactics
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to identify inconsistencies and red flags in applications
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with Underwriting and other cross-functional teams
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite – (Intermediate) (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and familiarity with fraud-related software systems
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple investigations simultaneously in a fast-paced environment

PREFERRED SKILLS

  • Experience in the auto lending industry is a plus
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements related to identity verification and fraud detection.
  • Strong investigative and problem-solving skills
