Job Summary

A Staff Interpreter works full-time as needed to provide interpreting services for students who are d/Deaf, deafblind, or hard of hearing to ensure appropriate accommodations in academic settings, meetings with faculty and staff, and campus events. May work evening and weekend hours in-person at the various Columbus State Campuses and Regional Learning Centers and/or virtually contingent upon student need and assignment/course modality.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Accommodation Delivery

  • Interprets for students, faculty, staff, and visitors who are d/Deaf, deafblind, or hard of hearing using American Sign Language, Signed English, and/or Tactile/Pro Tactile. Interprets for non-signing hearing students, faculty, and visitors using spoken English.
  • Engages in pre- and post-conferencing with peers, supervisor, and consumers. Prepares for classroom interpretation by reviewing textbooks, assignments, videos, and other related material via Blackboard. Educates campus members regarding interpreter roles and accommodations for deaf and hard of hearing students. Maintains confidentiality of student records and other confidential information.
  • Provides functional guidance to practicum students as they prepare to graduate from the College's interpreting education program.
  • Stays abreast of trends impacting the profession and consumer population through professional development activities. Facilitates interdepartmental outreach and collaboration.
  • Assists with scheduling interpreting staff for team interpreting in the classroom, campus events, and substitute interpreting to ensure each student is matched with interpreters with appropriate language skills for maximum communication access.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

  • Associate’s Degree in Interpreting/Transliterating
  • One (1) years of closely related experience.
  • Ability to work towards the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) National Certification.
  • State Motor Vehicle Operator's License or demonstrable ability to gain access to work site(s).
  • *An appropriate combination of education, training, coursework, and experience may qualify a candidate.
