Job Description

The Global Risk & Compliance (GRC) organization serves as American Express’ independent risk management function. GRC maintains the enterprise risk framework, provides oversight and challenge, and monitors key risks. By embedding risk discipline into strategy and operations, GRC enables responsible growth, innovation, and long-term value creation while protecting customers and shareholders.

The Technical Risk Management (TRM) team safeguards the enterprise, globally, by identifying, assessing, monitoring & reporting risks across Information & Cyber Security Risk, Technology Risk, Data Risk, Resiliency Risk, and AI Risk.

The Manager, Artificial Intelligence (AI) Risk Management is a role focused on managing the risks associated with the development and deployment of AI within American Express. The incumbent will be responsible for executing on the overall risk management and governance framework for non-Traditional AI adoption at the Company. We are seeking an experienced manager to be a part of this exciting journey.

Responsibilities

  • Implement and maintain the AI risk management framework, AI risk management policy, and AI risk capabilities to identify, measure, manage, monitor, and report risks related to AI.
  • Identify heightened and novel risks presented by non-Traditional AI and oversee controls in line with AXP’s risk and control framework.
  • Execute monitoring and testing processes to continuously evaluate AI risks.
  • Identify emerging AI risk themes.
  • Collaborate with leadership across Technology, Innovation, Risk, Legal, Data and other organizations to report on the organization’s AI risk profile for AI.
  • Develop Board and management reporting on key AI risk metrics.
  • Design and develop AI risk training resources.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum of five-years experience in AI Risk Management and/or design and implementation of AI guardrails.
  • Strong background in risk management, compliance, and governance.
  • Deep technical expertise in AI technologies and their potential risks.
  • Advanced degree in Technology, Engineering, Risk Management, Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related discipline is preferred.
  • Knowledgeable of relevant Financial Services Industry regulations globally, AI standards, and AI ethical principles.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proven track record in AI-enabled risk management is desirable.
  • Intellectual curiosity.
  • Ability to collaboratively deliver outcomes and results in an ambiguous environment.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills to influence cross-functional teams.
  • Relevant industry certifications (e.g., GARP’s Risk and AI).
