Manager, API Product Management
The Manager, API Product Management will support the continued evolution of American Express’s API strategy across Global Merchant and Network Services. APIs are foundational to how American Express enables partners, accelerates innovation, and delivers scalable customer experiences. This role plays a critical part in shaping API products that are intuitive to adopt, easy to integrate, and aligned to business outcomes.
This is a product-forward role focused on defining and delivering API capabilities as consumable products—balancing partner and developer experience, platform consistency, and enterprise priorities. The Manager will act as a connector between business stakeholders, product teams, and engineering, ensuring API capabilities are positioned as enablers of growth rather than purely technical assets.
An effective API Product Manager brings strong product instincts, working technical fluency, and a passion for building experiences that developers and partners want to use.
API Product Strategy & Lifecycle Ownership
- Own the product vision and roadmap for capabilities and processes that enhance the end-to-end API lifecycle, including governance, product development, and developer experience.
- Define and prioritize lifecycle capabilities that improve how API products are designed, built, documented, versioned, onboarded, supported, and retired.
- Translate business objectives and partner needs into clear product requirements that shape lifecycle standards and enable consistent, high-quality API delivery across teams.
·Experience owning a product roadmap and backlog for platform or lifecycle capabilities, ideally related to APIs, developer platforms, or technical products.
Partner & Developer Experience
- Advocate for a cohesive and intuitive API lifecycle experience for internal and external consumers, including onboarding, documentation, change management, and support processes.
- Identify friction points across the API lifecycle and partner with stakeholders to improve discoverability, usability, and time-to-value for partners.
- Ensure API capabilities and processes are designed with adoption, reliability, and clarity as core product outcomes.
Collaboration with Engineering & Product Teams
- Partner closely with engineering and platform teams to guide the implementation of lifecycle capabilities, tooling, and standards.
- Participate in technical discussions to understand lifecycle trade-offs (e.g., governance vs. speed, consistency vs. flexibility) while keeping decisions grounded in product outcomes.
- Familiarity with emerging AI and agent-based patterns and their implications for API design, lifecycle management, and developer experience.
- Provide clear product requirements and acceptance criteria for lifecycle initiatives, ensuring alignment with delivery timelines and business priorities.
Governance & Platform Alignment
- Help define and evolve API governance models, standards, and best practices that support scalable, secure, and consistent API delivery.
- Collaborate with architecture, security, and platform partners to ensure lifecycle capabilities align with enterprise policies while remaining practical for delivery teams.
- Contribute to governance processes that balance innovation, developer autonomy, and long-term platform sustainability.
Business Alignment & Measurement
- Serve as a bridge between technical execution and business strategy, ensuring API lifecycle capabilities are positioned as enablers of growth and partner success.
- Define and track KPIs related to API adoption, developer satisfaction, lifecycle efficiency, and overall platform health.
- Communicate the value and impact of lifecycle investments to stakeholders across product, technology, and business teams.
