How will you make an impact in this role?

American Express is seeking a strategic Manager, Communications to support the Corporate Development team, spanning Amex Ventures, American Express’ venture capital arm, and Mergers & Acquisitions (M&A). This individual will craft clear, compelling narratives that articulate our investment strategy, M&A activity, and innovation priorities to internal and external audiences.

The ideal candidate is an exceptional writer and strategic storyteller with a strong understanding of the venture capital, startup, fintech, and corporate development ecosystem. This individual will partner closely with senior leaders to translate complex strategic initiatives into compelling communications that strengthen reputation, enhance stakeholder engagement, and reinforce American Express’ leadership in growth and innovation.

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership Communications:

  • Draft executive communications including strategic updates, speaking points, LinkedIn posts, blogs, and thought leadership for the EVP of Corporate Development, SVP of Amex Ventures, and senior leaders.
  • Prepare leaders for media interviews, panel appearances, and industry engagements.
  • Develop internal memos related to investments, strategic priorities, and other transactions.

External Communications & Media Relations:

  • Partner with external PR agencies and other Corporate Affairs teams to identify and secure proactive media opportunities tied to venture investments, corporate development, and innovation themes.
  • Develop press materials, messaging frameworks, Q&A documents, and background documents supporting investment, partnership and M&A announcements.
  • Monitor media and industry trends across fintech, agentic commerce, generative AI, cybersecurity, consumer services, and other innovation sectors to inform proactive storytelling.

Strategic Positioning & Cross-Functional Alignment:

  • Develop differentiated positioning that reinforces American Express’ leadership in venture investing, strategic partnerships, and corporate development
  • Translate complex deal structures and investment theses into accessible content for diverse audiences.
  • Collaborate with Corporate Affairs, Investor Relations, Legal, and business teams to ensure aligned, accurate, and timely messaging.

Internal Communications & Integration Support:

  • Develop and manage internal communications plans tied to the work done in Corporate Development and Amex Ventures.
  • Create FAQs, leadership updates, and enterprise messaging that inform and engage colleagues.

Project Management:

  • Manage multiple concurrent communications initiatives across investments, acquisitions, and strategic programs.
  • Coordinate timelines, stakeholder approvals, and cross-functional alignment to ensure seamless execution.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience in corporate communications, public relations, financial communications, or related field.
  • Strong understanding of the venture capital, startup, fintech, and/or corporate development ecosystem.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills with the ability to distill complex financial and strategic concepts into clear, compelling narratives.
  • Strong command of Microsoft Office (Outlook, PowerPoint, Word).
  • Excellent attention to detail, organizational, and project management skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and stakeholders simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively across functions and seniority levels.
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, Marketing, Business, or related field.
  • Writing samples required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience supporting communications for venture capital, private equity, investment banking, corporate development, or innovation teams.
  • Background in communications for a well-known brand or agency.
  • Experience drafting executive thought leadership and social content (LinkedIn, blogs, op-eds).
  • Deep familiarity with emerging innovation trends, including fintech, AI, cybersecurity, and digital commerce.

Salary Range: $89,250.00 to $150,250.00 annually + bonus + benefits
