The Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) Office Technician supports engineering, surveying, and construction projects by transforming field-collected utility information into accurate, organized, and usable project data. This position reviews records and field documentation, prepares utility mapping and technical deliverables, and coordinates with SUE field and project teams to support quality, consistency, and timely project execution.

What you will do:

  • Review, organize, and process utility field data, survey information, photographs, sketches, and notes received from SUE field teams.
  • Prepare and update utility maps, plan sheets, exhibits, drawings, and related project deliverables using computer-aided design (CAD), GIS, and other applicable platforms.
  • Interpret utility records, as-built drawings, survey data, engineering plans, and other source documents to support subsurface utility investigations and mapping.
  • Compile utility attributes, including utility type, location, depth, size, material, ownership, and quality level, as documented by field and project teams.
  • Perform routine quality control reviews to identify incomplete, inconsistent, or conflicting information and coordinate resolution with field staff and project leadership.
  • Maintain organized electronic project files, databases, drawing files, records, and documentation in accordance with company and project requirements.
  • Assist with the preparation of technical reports, summaries, data tables, transmittals, and project deliverables.
  • Coordinate with SUE field technicians, survey crews, engineers, designers, project managers, utility owners, and other stakeholders to support project execution.
  • Track assigned tasks and deliverables, communicate status, and support established project schedules and budgets.
  • Apply established SUE, survey, CAD, GIS, quality, and documentation standards to assigned work.
  • Provide office-based technical support to field operations and assist with research, record requests, and project setup as assigned.
  • Conduct visual assessments of plans, maps, records, and project deliverables for completeness and accuracy.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • May remain in a stationary position and operate a computer and other office equipment for extended periods.

What you will bring:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Associate degree in Surveying, Civil Engineering Technology, Computer-Aided Design (CAD), Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Utility Engineering, Construction Technology, or a related field preferred.
  • 0-2 years of experience in SUE, surveying, utility mapping, CAD drafting, GIS, engineering support, construction documentation, or a related technical field preferred.
  • Experience reviewing field notes, survey data, utility records, engineering plans, or as-built drawings preferred.
  • Experience preparing or updating technical drawings, maps, exhibits, or project documentation preferred.
  • Working knowledge of underground utility systems and SUE concepts preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret utility maps, survey information, engineering plans, record drawings, and construction documents.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accurate, complete, and consistent technical documentation.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments, prioritize workload, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and time-management skills.
  • Possession of a valid drivers license with a clean driving record and the ability to operate a motor vehicle is required.
  • Certified Survey Technician (CST) certification preferred.
  • GIS, CAD, utility mapping, or related technical certifications preferred.
  • Microsoft Suite Products (e.g., Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, SharePoint, OneDrive, etc.).
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD Civil 3D or similar computer-aided design software preferred.
  • Familiarity with GIS and utility mapping platforms preferred.
  • Experience with GPS, survey, or electronic field data collection software preferred.
  • Ability to learn and utilize company-specific project management, document management, and technical software systems.
  • Work is primarily performed in an office environment with standard office equipment.
  • May be required to work onsite at a WSB office, as needed, up to five days per week, as required by the project, client, or hiring manager.
  • Standard work schedules apply; additional hours may be required to meet project deadlines.
  • Travel or field visits may be required to support project needs or stakeholder collaboration.
  • Travel may be required.
