Harvard Business School (HBS) Executive Education brings together senior executives from the world’s most influential organizations, preparing them to reach the next level for their organizations and for themselves. Working closely with HBS’s world-class faculty, we design and deliver programs for individuals and for organizations, welcoming over 12,000 participants annually from over 130 countries. Programs range from a few days to multiple weeks. Most programs are delivered on the HBS campus, where participants live, learn, and dine together in dedicated Executive Education residences and facilities. Our programming includes in-person, virtual, and blended (combining both in-person and virtual learning) options. The Executive Education department consists of open enrollment, global, and custom program portfolio management; guest services; marketing; corporate sales; program operations; technology services; human resources; enrollment and admissions; and finance.


Job Description

Oversee the delivery of executive education programming, which may include design, development, client relationship management, logistics management, program analysis and project management. The Portfolio Director is responsible for ensuring the overall success of a portfolio of open-enrollment executive education programs. This position reports to the Senior Director, Focused Programs.

This role resembles a product-management position, has P&L responsibility, and collaboratively achieves desired outcomes within a matrix of Sales and Marketing, Program Delivery, Enrollment and Admissions Services, Finance, and IT/data management contributors.

Job Description

  • Build trust and collaboration by being present on-site and engaging directly with colleagues and various constituents.
  • Work as a member of the Open Enrollment (OE) team to shape and implement a growth strategy for an assigned program portfolio that maximizes faculty development, educational impact for participants and sponsoring organizations, and financial contribution.
  • Work with applicants, corporate clients, and the Executive Education Sales & Marketing team to develop and maintain relationships, manage enrollment, and understand the needs of global executive clients.
  • Manage programs through their entire life cycle, including working with faculty on new ideas, collaborating with marketing and sales teams, overseeing admissions, coordinating with program delivery teams, and evaluating program effectiveness qualitatively and quantitatively.
  • Develop comprehensive knowledge of the School’s intellectual capital, teaching models, and new methodologies.
  • Partner with faculty and Executive Education leadership to create or refresh programs; track performance and analyze program metrics.
  • Develop strong relationships with Sales & Marketing and Program Operations & Delivery to ensure successful logistical execution.
  • This role is responsible for other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience required.
  • Minimum of 8 years of relevant work experience is required.
  • In addition to the 8 years of experience listed above, 2+ years of experience in higher education, executive education, corporate talent and leadership development, or professional services is required.

Additional Qualifications

  • High EQ, intellectual curiosity, and drive.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to thrive in a collaborative and often ambiguous environment.
  • Superior written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Excellent project management skills.
  • Preferred: familiarity with digital learning platforms, pedagogy and design, and generative AI tools and platforms.

Additional Information
  • Standard Hours/Schedule: 40 hours per week
  • Compensation Range/Rate: $135,000 to $145,000 annually, commensurate with experience

This is a hybrid position based on our Boston, MA campus. During program sessions, this role is required to be on campus for the full duration of the program. When not in session, Executive Education expects Program Delivery staff to be onsite a minimum of 2 days per week, with departments providing onsite coverage Monday through Friday. Specific onsite days and hours may vary based on business needs.

Ability to work extended overtime hours (including some evenings and weekends) and occasional domestic or international travel is required based on program needs.

Work Format Details

This is a position that is based at a Harvard campus location with some remote work options available. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. All remote work must be performed within one of the Harvard Registered Payroll States, which currently includes Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, Washington, and California (CA for exempt positions only). Certain visa types and funding sources may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.
