The Team
The Brokerage Record Technology Tax Engineering team within Fidelity Wealth Technology is looking for a passionate and experienced Principal Mainframe Software Engineer to help design, enhance, and modernize our critical tax processing systems. You will collaborate closely with architecture, product, and business partners to build reliable, scalable solutions that support Fidelity’s brokerage and tax processing platforms.
The Purpose
You will quickly develop a deep understanding of our mainframe ecosystem—including core applications, data flows, integrations, and end?to?end processing. You will be a key technical leader focused on engineering excellence, platform modernization, and ensuring the reliability, performance, and scalability of high?volume, business?critical systems.
The Expertise You Bring
- Deep hands?on expertise with COBOL, JCL, VSAM, CICS, batch/online processing, IOM, and enterprise batch scheduling tools
- Extensive experience designing, engineering, and optimizing mainframe applications.
- SQL proficiency across DB2, Oracle, and/or Postgres with strong data analysis and performance debugging skills
- Proven experience modernizing legacy mainframe systems and integrating with distributed or cloud architectures
- Ability to research, architect, and deliver sophisticated end?to?end technical solutions
- Strong Agile background with the ability to mentor teams and influence technical direction
- Outstanding analytical, debugging, and cross?functional collaboration skills
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Computer Science Engineering

- Lead and contribute to architecture design initiatives that shape mainframe and hybrid?platform solutions
- Define and implement application and system?level architectures for high?performance, resilient mainframe environments
- Recommend development tools, testing frameworks, and engineering methodologies to improve quality and efficiency
- Ensure production readiness, quality assurance, performance, and compliance with enterprise standards
- Author comprehensive documentation including architecture diagrams, integration specs, and modernization playbooks
- Lead full project lifecycle planning and execution for large?scale, cross?platform initiatives
- Identify engineering risks and drive mitigation strategies to ensure system resilience
- Serve as a senior liaison to business and technology partners, translating requirements and resolving technical issues
- Champion production stability by proactively monitoring, diagnosing, and resolving system issues, driving root?cause analysis, and ensuring 24/7 reliability
