Job Description

Between November and January 2025, Harvard Law School’s Library Innovation Lab launched a government data vault to download, sign, and share copies of the public federal data that is most valuable to researchers, scholars, civil society, and the public. This work has evolved to become our Public Data Project, part of Harvard Law School Library’s centuries-long role in preserving and sharing accurate copies of federal documents, ensuring that vital resources remain accessible notwithstanding any change in funding, priorities, or accidental loss. After hiring a Project Lead, we are now looking to build the team with a Public Data Product and Research Manager (Public Data PRM), who will oversee the building of tools and help to shape the direction of LIL’s Public Data Project.

As the Public Data PRM, you will:

  • Contribute to projects related to large sets of government data, including the development tools to monitor and visualize the data.
  • Work with engineers to filter, clean, and otherwise wrangle large government data sets.
  • Help define priorities for government data collection.
  • Work with the Project Lead for Public Data, Product and Research Director, engineering team, and researchers in the lab to prioritize the Public Data Project’s many efforts.
  • Participate in user outreach and community development for the Public Data Project, including attending community meetings, writing blog posts, promoting platforms to potential partners, and coordinating symposiums or workshops.
  • Support and represent projects as an ambassador to LIL’s project partners.
  • Draft product plans to capture objectives, establish success criteria, and identify risks.
  • Maintain a personal and collaborative research agenda and project portfolio.

  • Strong sense of curiosity, with an ability to immerse oneself in the topic of the day.
  • An ability to translate user needs to technical requirements across an array of different audiences and a small engineering team with limited resources.
  • Collaborative spirit with an ability to maintain clear lines of communication across team members.
  • Tertiary or direct knowledge of the legal field, legal academia, librarianship and technology or a willingness to learn in a fast-paced environment.
  • Comfort with the culture of an innovation lab within an academic library.
  • Ability and willingness to work quickly, not be afraid to make mistakes, but also the ability to be patient and detail oriented.
