Rapid Consumer Assessment of Compressed Earth Blocks (CEBs) Technology

Posting Description

Access to adequate and affordable housing remains a pressing challenge across Africa, particularly in the face of rapid urbanization and climate change. Compressed Earth Blocks (CEBs) present a sustainable, cost-effective, and locally sourced alternative to conventional building materials. Habitat for Humanity, in partnership with a private sector actor, is implementing an Integrated Housing Project in Laikipia County. The project aims to stimulate the local housing market to innovate, showcase, and generate demand for the use of CEBs.

To support this effort, Habitat for Humanity seeks to conduct a rapid consumer assessment to explore the market potential of CEBs as a housing solution, with a specific focus on low-income women. This assessment will examine women’s awareness, perceptions, and adoption readiness of CEBs, providing insights into opportunities and barriers to uptake. The findings will inform the design and rollout of targeted marketing campaigns that highlight the value proposition of CEBs, thereby strengthening demand and advancing inclusive housing solutions.

Objectives of the rapid assessment

  1. Examine knowledge, attitudes, perceptions, and practices among women regarding CEBs, including awareness of benefits and limitations.
  2. Identify the key drivers and barriers influencing women’s adoption of Compressed Earth Blocks (CEBs) as a housing solution.
  3. Analyze household decision-making processes that shape demand for housing solutions, comparing CEBs with alternative materials, and develop a customer journey map.
  4. Determine women’s specific housing needs and preferences when selecting housing solutions, how or what they build with those solutions including CEBs.
  5. Assess purchasing power and preferred payment mechanisms for housing solutions among women including willingness to pay for those solutions and CEBs.
  6. Map trusted information and communication sources and channels used by women, identifying marketing opportunities to effectively reach this target group.
  7. Develop a customer profile for CEBs with a focus on women, highlighting demographic, socio-economic, and behavioral characteristics.
  8. Segment potential consumers into adopter categories and define each segment.
  9. Support CEB partner to develop marketing and communication plans based on research findings
