Job Description

The Ginty Laboratory in the Department of Neurobiology at Harvard Medical School is looking for a highly motivated Research Assistant to assist in the study of the sensory responses in the parabrachial nucleus. This project utilizes mouse genetics, molecular biology, histological and behavioral approaches and electrophysiology to understand neurobiological mechanisms of touch and pain. The Research Assistant will perform a variety of basic and general laboratory research and clerical tasks under specific direction, and may be asked to perform familiar tasks independently.

Typical Duties

  1. Performs laboratory experiments utilizing standard techniques and equipment including but not limited to immunohistochemical analysis and mouse behavior.
  2. Performs related laboratory maintenance such as maintaining and cleaning equipment and ordering supplies.
  3. Performs mouse husbandry tasks.
  4. Assists in the design of laboratory experiments, techniques, and protocols as a member of a project team.
  5. Processes, organizes and summarizes data, reporting experiment results using a variety of scientific, word processing, spreadsheet or statistical software applications or program platforms.
  6. May process orders or invoices or undertake other clerical and simple accounting duties under the direction of administrative personnel.
  7. May instruct other staff and students in basic laboratory techniques.


Working Conditions:

  • May be required to work with a variety of hazardous materials.
  • Required to work with and handle animals.


Physical Requirements:

  • May be required to lift, move and transport related laboratory equipment.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • At least one-year related work experience (relevant course work may count towards experience).
  • College background or equivalent work experience, preferably in a related discipline.


Additional Qualifications and Skills:

  • Demonstrated abilities in basic laboratory techniques helpful but not required.
  • Exposure to applicable computer technologies, including specific software applications, may be required.
  • Appropriate communications skills required.
  • Exposure to mouse husbandry and behavioral assays is required.

Additional Information
  • Term: This is a one-year term position from the date of hire, with the possibility of extension, contingent upon work performance and continued funding to support the position.
  • Standard Hours/Schedule: 35 hrs. per week | Monday - Friday | 9:00 am - 5:00 pm
