Job Description

Harvard Business School (HBS) seeks a Research Associate to support Professor Soltes in his research focused on corporate integrity and risk management. The scope of work is primarily focused on writing, but there is potential to lean into coding survey data in python, if alignment with the candidate’s skill set. The successful candidate will provide advanced subject-area expertise, analysis, and interpretation to the faculty.

The Research Associates (RA) position reports directly to faculty supervisors and administrative manager in the Research Staff Services office. Ideal RA candidates will be comfortable in an environment that requires a high level of independence, intellectual curiosity, and the ability to use discretionary judgment.


Primary duties include:

  • Build trust and collaboration by being present on-site and engaging directly with colleagues and various constituents.
  • Build questionnaires and conduct interviews with various groups, such as company employees
  • Investigate qualitative data, such as interviews or focus groups, and quantitative data
  • Edit and draft all forms of academic writing including but not limited to, articles, case policy memos and book chapters; create original writing based on research and interviews.
  • Examine prior research on areas including compliance regulation, organizational justice, psychological safety, among others.
  • Ensure compliance with department, University, and federal regulations. Complete work with only general direction. Be aware of department, School, University policies and potential outside research policies.
  • Responsible for other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • Advanced JD degree required, or bachelor’s degree with 5+ years relevant work experience, with a focus in Law, Economics, or related field knowledge.
  • Comfort with analyzing qualitative and quantitative data through statistical methods
  • Criminal law exposure is required.

Additional Qualifications and Skills:

The candidate must have extremely high standards in terms of quality of work, attention to detail, strong organization skills, and absolute commitment to task completion. Must be able to balance multiple tasks and shifting priorities under tight deadlines at an accelerated pace when necessary. It is helpful if the candidate is familiar with navigating a complex organization, such as Harvard Business School.

  • Other Information: This is a full-time term appointment starting as soon as possiblethrough June 30, 2026, with potential for re-appointment for the following year. All HBS RA roles are structured as one-year appointments.

    This is a hybrid position which we consider to be a combination of remote and onsite work at our Boston, MA based campus. HBS expects all staff to be onsite 3 days per week and departments provide onsite coverage Monday – Friday. Specific hours and days onsite will be determined by business needs and are subject to change with appropriate advanced notice.

    We may conduct candidate interviews virtually (phone and/or via Zoom) and/or in-person for this role. A cover letter is required to be considered for this opportunity. All candidates will be expected to submit a writing sample, transcript, and a code sample.

Work Format Details

This is a position that is based at a Harvard campus location with some remote work options available. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. All remote work must be performed within one of the Harvard Registered Payroll States, which currently includes Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, Washington, and California (CA for exempt positions only). Certain visa types and funding sources may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.
