Research / Development
Full Time
Description
Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Scientific Machine Learning Postdoctoral Research Associate to work in our Computational Mechanics and Materials department. Our team works a 9x80 schedule located out of our Idaho Falls facility with every Friday off.
You will develop novel physics-based machine learning and uncertainty quantification methods while applying them to large-scale modeling and simulation problems through the MOOSE, BISON fuel performance, and Grizzly structural materials codes. This position requires domain expertise in SciML and/or uncertainty quantification and the ability to closely work with nuclear fuels, materials, and finite element modeling experts to demonstrate impacts. The position entails writing scientific manuscripts for peer-reviewed journal publication and presentation of research results at national and international conferences and meetings.
You should have a strong expertise in at least one area:
- SciML such as physics-based machine learning, operator learning, generative models (GANs, diffusion models) for scientific computing, GPU computing for SciML, etc.
- Uncertainty quantification such as Bayesian methods, Bayesian optimization, Gaussian processes, etc.
In addition, it is required that you have experience applying SciML and/or uncertainty quantification methods to finite element modeling and simulations. Experience coding in C++ and Python is strongly preferred. Expected to be a strong asset to our interdisciplinary R&D team and work effectively both alone and as a team member. Must be self-motivated but also take direction from other team members and peers.
Qualifications
PhD requirements must be completed by commencement of appointment and within the previous 5 years
- Demonstrating good judgement in the research and applications of SciML and uncertainty quantification.
- Applying SciML and uncertainty quantification methods to computational problems including but not limited to nuclear fuels and materials problems.
- Closely working with domain experts in nuclear fuels and materials and finite element methods to demonstrate the impact of SciML and uncertainty quantification.
